Gear Selection- 1.6 manual expression 5 door

We have a 2003 53 plate 1.6 expression, my wife drives the car and we have had great trouble free motoring up until today. The gear selection has gone all funny, it is like stirring soup, 1st is no where to be found and third is where first is, reverse is OK but apart from that it is not well. Even when you have found a gear ther level can be moved all over the place. I have checked under the bonnet and see 2 cables coming from the underneath to the gearbox, both of these are connected and you can not see anything under the car due to the heat shield.
Can anyone help me or is it a trip to my local specialist on Monday.
Thanks for your help

Yes, it is a manual. the gears have been perfect up until yesterday, my wife just parked up and then when she went back to the car to drive off they were all funny.
I though it might be a slack linkage or a cable off but if all seems attached.
not sure if it is at the gearlever area or at the gearbox but something is very wrong

i had the same problem with my brother's car (Seat Leon). simply, there is a rubber (ring shaped) inside the gearbox itself, it should be done from underneath the car. this rubber needs to be replaced and its very cheap... i think that all manual cars have the same rubber ring.

Got car back today, one of the cables had snapped at he gear lever side, one cable was 70 quid odd but you can but the whole assembly for 104, opted for the whole assembly as saved time on fitting which outweighed the cost of the part. All now fine!
Thanks to all for your help
