Noise when turning steering wheel

Postby Ray » Fri Dec 28, 2007 6:36 pm

Any ideas?
I've read about clicking noises but I get a weird noise which is best described as a creaking spring when I turn the wheel - i think in both ways not sure

Ray

I reckon your top front suspension bearings will need replacing, mine started to make a similar noise (like a twanging sound) and that's what they changed.

Are you still under warranty?

I had my top strut bearing replaced at my last service 3 weeks ago. I now have a twanging sound which sounds like the spring being wound up and releasing when I turn.

i'm literally teetering on warranty! It's going to a non-franchise for service next saturday!

Only hear it on low speed turns (parking speeds).

I have similar problem and reading various posts have heard it could be CV joints. Mine does it when turning left or right at low speeds but not when free wheeling only when in gear. Did pass its MOT like this but it's seems to be getting louder now so may have to get it looked at.

it's the top mounts that have gone. Apparently is is quite common. Mine went on a 2005 1.9 dci. Changed under warranty. Renault engineer knew exactly what is was when he turned the wheel and heard the twang...

Yes very common on a lot of Renaults. About £65 a side for the part.

Yes, this exact same thing happened to my car over Christmas. Garage fixed it under warranty. They diagnosed it very quickly and sorted it within a few hours, so it must be well known!
