Rattler

Postby Ross W » Mon Dec 17, 2007 10:44 pm

Hi,

When I start my car the exhaust rattles as if it's loose. I've had a look and it doesn't seem to be loose, and it's only when it's idling and or when I'm depressing the clutch.

Any suggestions, help muchly appreciated.

R

If you've been through any standing water recently, the heat reflector near the kink towards the back may be touching the pipe. This causes quite a loud rattle on starting but is usually not audible when you get up to speed. Pain in the arse, though, having to bend it back every time there's heavy rain!

The heat shield is a very close fit to the exhaust and gets very hot, so when you go through a puddle of cold water the metal contracts enough for it to touch the exhaust.
Make improvements, not excuses!

Hi,

Im new to this site, bought a megane II dynamique S a few months ago and the rattles are driving me insane!!! The dash rattles where the dash meets the windscreen and there is a creaking from the rear....theres less noise outside the car than in!!

Anyone know what does this or know a cure for it or am im in for this for the next few years?? So far the dealer has been useless and said im imagining it!!

Thanks

More or less the whole underneath is covered by a heat shield, some of it seems to be the lowest part of the body, so
it can possibly touch something and bend. But it's as well easy to bend to a new form ;) Mine began to rattle probably
after having driven through some deep snow. Some bending of the heat shield in strategic places was the fix.
Thanks for the tip!

I had the exact same problem - drove over some frozen snow almost up to the sill height. Rattles when starting. When (if?) the snow ever goes away, I'll be underneath doing sheet metal work. Might take the opportunity to get some waxoyl out too if any of the coating has been fetched off.

Best advice for Megane owners: sell it before it bankrupts you!
