1.6 Whine at around 50mph

Postby GoldenWonder » Sat Nov 17, 2007 6:47 pm

My 2005 55 1.6 VVT is making a slightly irritating whining noise at almost exactly 50mph. Its not too loud, but noticeable.

At first I thought it was interference on the radio (that sort of whining noise) but since I swapped the radio for a new Sony I've noticed it again!

Is there any known gearbox or drivetrain 'traits' that cause this noise? It really only happens at 50mph (give or take an mph or two!) so it seems possible its another 'feature'?

I get a whirring or whining noise as I accelerate through 50-52mph on my 1.4 and I think it may just be one of those odd noises that you get at certain speeds. I'm sure there have been posts about this before but I am not unduly worried as I still have a year of warranty left.

I'm guessing the 1.4 and 1.6 will have the same gearbox etc, so maybe its just a characteristic of the drivetrain?

I must be getting paranoid about every new noise I notice!

French whine is better than UK whine though :D

This French whine is too expensive for my tastes though!

I don't know if this will be any use or consolation but my auto used to whine when in top and on overrun at around that speed.

This whine is when accelerating/decelerating/coasting and is quite loud at 50-55mph. Not really noticeable any other time.

I'm waiting for a couple of other faults to develop before I book it back in again! Its been in 8 times in the last 3 months and I'm getting a little bored of the routine.

I also get a slight resonence at around 28-30mph but I can only hear it if the road is smooth and quiet. Anyone else out there getting a whine at 50mph? I suspect it could just be a natural sound from the diff at a certain speed although If it gets louder with age I might change my opinion.

driving at nearly any sped in my car on a smooth road. when i lift my foot from the accelerater i hear a very slight whining noise almost sounds like the electric motor of a remote control car but faint. i assume its always in the background but you just cant hear it when you put the foot back down. i imagin its nothin to worry about.

I don't think it is a fault, just seems to be a characteristic of the engine. My old Megane 1.6 used to go it. Reminds me a bit of some of the higher pitch noises some of the newer buses make when shifting around.
