Steering Failure

Well after the initial normal problems (leaks in the drivers door pod) etc i have now had a steering failure on my 06 plate megane dynamic. Taken it to Slaters in Abergele and was told my car needs a whole new steering column. Its only done 18k. Is this a common fault or am i in for a problem car?
Renault wont comment if many or any cars have been recalled with this problem and hope people in here can help me out.
Thanks

Keep your fingers crossed! With any luck the part won't come in for over a week, and you can enjoy a couple of weeks problem-free driving in the mazda!

What a bunch of cowboys!!!! Got my car back finally after 2 weeks of it being in garage, they replaced whole rack and column (probaily as they had no idea what else to do) i went to adjust my column height tonight and the lever is not there, can anyody tell me if they made a column without an adjuster (therefore putting the wrong one on my car) OR they just forgot to re-attach the handle. The garage is shut until tommorow, but like to have a rough idea before they fob me off with lies.
Thanks

Apparently they forgot to replace the handle
The steering column and the adjustment handle are 2 separate parts, when the column is replaced, they take the old handle and put it on the new column...
I can't believe no one noticed it wasn't there

Hi
What actually happened when your steering failed? I have a similar age/miles car as your and the steering has been making a whinning noise when turning full lock, and every now and then the steering gets heavy very briefly.
Was wondering if I have same problem. Have not had a chance to take it the dealer yet.

I had no indictation it was going to fail, parked it up after finishing work one night (it was driving fine), got in it the next morning with a Steering failure warning on my dash. and the STOp light on. Im sure not all will fail so nmo need to worry.
Its booked in to get the handle reattached but not my problem now after 6 mths of hassle to and from garage ive sold it back to where i bought it and got myself a Subaru Impreza
