Servicing questions.

Postby rsjg80 » Wed Oct 31, 2007 1:57 am

Please be nice!

My 55 Renault Megane has started flashing 'Change Oil Soon' and I know from reading posts on here that it means the service is due soon. That's not a surprise as it's on around 15k miles and in December reaches its 2nd birthday.

My question is a lot more simple and really shows I know nothing about cars! What's entailed in a service and how much does it cost? And what are the implications as regards my warranty? My last (and first) car was a knackered old Punto and I never got it serviced, just prayed it went through MOT every year! Obviously that's not a concern for another year with the Renault.

So real "Dummies Guide To Servicing" please!!!

this is for Petrol models...
on 2yrs or 18k
Oil & filter (use a new oil plug washer)
Air Filter ??

then at 36k (4 yrs)
Oil & Filter (use a new oil plug washer)
Spark Plugs
Air Filter
Cabin Filter (for Aircon model)

plus checking stuff like tyres / exhaust / brake discs & pads etc.

As your still in manufacturers warranty you either have to get it serviced at renault or use a VAT registered garage that uses genuine renault parts.
either way the service book must be stamped.

renault service £200 ???, using an independant maybe half price.

rsjg80,

I got my 1st service done by renault "minute",dropped the car off morning and picked it up in the afternoon.

Pricewise, get quotes from dealers close to you, they won't quote you the same thing.I asked from 2 which are close to me,although they are both part of 1 franchise, there was about 40 quid difference in prices. But in the end, lucky me,got it cheaper as the guy on the phone quoted me the wrong price :D

the quotes were:
£178,£155.Got mine done for £135.
hope this helps.

went to the renault dealer near me in Gloucester, they had a chart up on their reception desk. the gold service was 179.99 which was the top service available... not bad hey!

My advice is use an independant if possible but make sure they use renault parts for warranty to be valid. Also when you ring for quotes ask exactly what is included, i thought i had a good quote from Renault in Whitby once till i picked up car and the price was almost £200 more than the quote. Apparently the quote didn't include parts. I learned from that experience!!!

I had my first service at 1 year. The booklet stated 18,000 miles or one year, whichever came first. Cost was £196 but I did have a Clio courtesy car for the day. I have 'Change oil soon' showing at the moment but I'm not due for a service until the first week of December.

I had my 36k mile service done 2 weeks back and the 'change oil soon'
message appeared at 35k and then just a week or two before the service
I had a flashing spanner annoy the life out of me - can't remember that
one at 18k !!

It is to give you time to get your service booked in and sorted....
the timelines of 18k and 36k are maximum mileage before service.
you are invalidating your warranty if you go over this and renault would be within their rights to dismiss any subsequent warranty claims you have whilst the service is overdue.
Imagine the cambelt failing @ 36.5k and you missed the service.

From what I understand you are allowed to go beyond the service
mileage by 1000 miles, which for some people can be 2 weeks motoring.

In my Renault Extended Warranty pack it states that the +1000 mile
marker must not be passed unless the warranty with be invalid.

My first service (12k) is due soon, I have 3 dealers within 20 miles of me so phoned them for quotes and got 3 prices, £225, £175 and £157 so it is certainly worth shopping around!
