Rear brake lights not working

Postby camel » Mon Sep 10, 2007 8:59 pm

Hi, noticed the rear nearside brake light was not working and presumed bulb had blown. However when i went for a new one, the offside light was not working either. Had bulbs checked in motor shop and working fine. Connectors seem ok and presume fuse is ok as eye-level central brake light working ok. Anyone had a similar problem or any idea what to try next? Car is 54 reg and 36000 service due next month - warranty expires in Nov!! Thanks

If you still have warranty, why not go back to the dealers and let them sort it out? :D

im an auto electricion on commercial vehicals,
on some the brake lights either side or on different looms and sometimes different fuses.
Obviously so both lights dont stop working at the same time.
Im not sure if this is the case on the meg.
Deffo check the fuse first though

Had the same problem with my 54 megane today. Off side brake light not working so changed bulb but still no joy. Fuse is not problem as only 1 fuse for both sides and break light above rear window and near side and other working fine.

The wiring in these models would challenge God.

You could have an earth problem; a bulb holder problem; ad infinitum.

Also, on some models, the wires are different colours on opposite sides of the car.

I would meter the various endings when the pedal is pushed. The more common problem is the top light - whereby the cause is usually a problem in the loom through the boot lid.

Check for all the obvious, then report back. I've never come across a problem of this sort that can't be cured for pennies, although I can always be proven wrong!

Remove the carpet and rearmost trim from the boot. The earths are as clear as daylight (bolted direct to the chassis). Can't miss them.
