I'll be doing a oil & filter change shortly. I notice the filter is mounted on the front of the engine block in a relatively difficult place to get your hands on (for big fat hands that is)

Is it best to access the filter from underneath or from above, when removing it?
also how does the engine bay undertray come off - is it screwed in, or just pull/push like the engine cover is.

Dead easy!

Take the undertray off, 8 bolts if memory serves correctly and attack the filter from underneath.

Trolley jack and two axel stand's required.

thanks for the info, ive got the oil & filter and some mini ramps so no problem getting the car off the ground, just a matter of getting motivated to do it now !!

The mini-ramps will do. In fact, it is sufficient to lift the front up by about 10cm. I usually undo only the three front bolts and two on the sides. Then the undertray bends down. Careful with the plastic hooks on the sides! Move the undertray left-right in order to release them.

In 1.9dci the oil plug washer needs to be replaced every time, which costs about £1 from dealers. Another advice is to use a piece of a newspaper to deflect the oil flow from under the filter and avoid soiling the engine.
