Does anyone have a 'proper' fix for this?

Mine was fixed once, about 50,000 miles ago and has been fine since. The repair seems to have been done very well (so I must have been lucky that day!) - they have joined in about 30mm extra wire to give it some slack and have covered the last 40mm or so with a thick cover that looks like it has been heat shrunk on to make that section much stronger. My size nines just miss the wire connector when I've got my foot fairly high on the pedal so I've adjusted my foot placement to be sure it misses! Anything bigger than a size nine (of if you drive in steel toecap rigger boots etc) then you are bound to be catching the wire all the time.
At the end of the day... ..it gets dark
