Weird Noise On Startup

Postby L33SA » Thu Apr 12, 2007 10:18 am

My car has been making a weird grinding? noise when I press the start button, but it was not that often and the car started up fine so I just thought it was something stupid.

However, :( going to work all this week when the car is cold the noise is so loud and it wont start first go.

Hard to describe the noise - a bit like a loud drill or fan? Sounds like its comin from the drivers side.

Any ideas?? Am hoping its somethin cheap to fix

Car is 1.6 dynamique many thanks xx

At a guess, it sounds like the starter motor is on its way out. Especially if the noise always stops after the car has started.

Probably not that cheap, but not catastrophic either.

Sorry no idea on cost. Try giving GSF a ring?

I know what you mean though, I think I cursed my car by coming here before I even bought it!

It would make me a bit nervous that they make a point about so called timewasters asking for refunds.

If the part isn't as described or doesn't work then they have to offer a refund and take the item back.

Still, if they insist the item is genuinely working, then it should be OK?

Should be fine, says its been tested and serviced.

If it doesn't work just return it.

Use paypal, easier to dispute if something goes wrong IMO.

Renault (Parks, Irvine, Scotland) just renewed my starter motor on my March 2003 1.6 Megane.
Cost including VAT was £320.

How did you know it was the starter motor cindognito? Did it start to make the weird noise I have described??

My cars just started doing this, and straight after a service but its not all the time.... Is this definatly the start motor? (Its what I originally expected).

Bit strange. When parked overnight at home on a sloped drive the car starts first time. Here at work also on a slope (both down and the left) I get the above symptons. This only started after the massive down poor, could this be anything to do with it? Should I let loose the WD40?

Haha.. When I first started to have this problem, the grinding noise on startup would never happen when my meg was parked outside on our drive (its sloped!). But it would usually always do it when I was finishing work and on any flat surface. Im sure my OH used to think I was hearing things because it would never do it when he was there at home!! Its VERY weird to say the least. In the end though, it did the noise on start up no matter where it was, even after standing for just 30 mins :(

Hope this isnt the start of dephaser pulley for you walibe I really do!!
