DO YOU KNOW WHAT ALARM YOU HAVE ON YOUR MEGANE?

Postby ICEMAN » Tue Mar 27, 2007 3:09 pm

Hi all,

bit of a long one here:

I have been on a constant mission for the last week trying to find the specification of the standard alarm system on my Renault Megane 2006 model.

I called my local garage in Derby and spoke with the technician there, who said that he does not know anything about the alarm system and that I should call Renault Customer Services.

I called RCS and after speaking with a couple of people and a call back I was advised that the alarm on my car is a Cobra Thatcham CAT1 alarm, but for specification I would have to call Cobra myself on 02089 431 098 but this number that was provided does not receive incoming calls.

I found another number for Cobra UK, they said that Renault buy the alarm system from Vestatec in Italy. But they do not have any information on that alarm system. And that I would have to contact Vestatec in Italy. I have email Vestatec but I haven't had a reply as of yet.

I've spoken with an alarm specialist and they said that I have 3 options:

Remove/suppress the existing/standard alarm and use the new alarm system (not recommended)

Integrate features from new alarm system to existing/standard alarm

Install new alarm system in parallel with existing/standard

All I want to do is upgrade the alarm system on my car as I want to take precautions from having my car broken into.

The first they advised is not recommended as the standard alarm is tied into the electrical loom and ignition.

The last is not practical, as having 2 sets of alarm fobs is not ideal!!

This leaves the 2nd option. The reason why im after the speciation of my standard alarm. There is an upgrade for these alarms, or additional features that can be added to the alarm (at additional cost), which im prepared to do. Is this alarm cam bus controlled or not? Nobody knows!!

I am shocked that non of the Renault garages, no local/national alarm specialist, no Renault CS advisors or Cobra Alarms specialists know anything about an alarm system that is in a Renault Megane that has been sold in the UK end of last year!

This leaves me in the mist of frustration, but as you can appreciate it just baffles me that a simple question "what alarm is installed in my car" has escalated into something that no one knows about!

No idea what it is, but one things for sure - do you really want somebody fiddling with French wiring and an alarm system that nobody seems to know anything about?

What kind of alarm were you thinking of? I can't quite work out how anything different would help put the scum off from breaking in?

Looks the business m8, but I wouldn't let anyone near the car to fit it unless they'd practised on someone else's Renault first! :D

I have a Renault compact 7887 fitted at Tees Port (I assume this was the port of entry to the UK) by CAT-UK.

Both of my Meganes had the Alarm manuals in the document folder along with the standard manual and service book.

I seem to remember my facelift one was a Cobra :)

The reason I am sure of this is ,I was in the garage last week , window regulater problem , had to disconnect the battery to get the window up , thus leaving me with a beeping noise when I locked the car, seens it shouldnt beep and was told it was a Cobra Alarm . phew all that in the one breath
