Meg2 documentation published occasionally at random sites tends to disappear as soon as people start putting links in their forum messages. To prevent automatic data collection the sensitive information (file names and the URL) in the above posts is dissolved in giberish. You can assemble the useful information from the first words in each line of text. Please don't bother unless you can read technical documentation in French.

I will remove these messages soon.

I have the entire pdf collection in French - using Altavista's babelfish I managed to translate the section regarding the steering system calibration.

Perhaps a visit to my dealer is mandatory...

And while we 're on the subject, try this on your Meggie:

With the wheels straight, windows closed, engine running and in a quiet place, grab the steering wheel and yank it left and right for a few degrees as fast as you can. Do you hear a "croop-croop" sound from the steering assembly?

I've tried this on 3 Meganes and it happened on all 3...

P.S. I'm not talking about the rotary switch noises or the u-joint nut and bolt clicking sound...

silencer, I've never heard of that before but I'll try it! Does everyone have the high pitched whining sound coming from the power steering motor?

For example, when parking and turning the wheel you can hear a whine. Much more noticeable when turning fast!

silencer51, have you tried getting your "croop-croop" sound with the power steering off? The forces under "dry steering" (when the car is not moving) can be great, thus causing sounds which are not heard during normal operation. Anyway, my steering did not produce this noise when trying your experiment on grass, and I am not brave enough to do the same on tarmac.

pw981, I've read somewhere that the high pitched sound is normal when one repeatedly and quickly turns the steering wheel from lock to lock. It is due to a known limitation of electrical power steering found in many cars. Again, if one wants to try it, better do it on grass. I cannot hear any other whining under "slow" steering, though it may be masked by the sound of 1.9dci.

I recently test-drove a new 1.9dci130 and its steering was different from mine. It felt too light and "detached". Looks like that they've changed something alongside with the bumpers being painted over...

Indeed the sound I am describing can only heard when trying this while stationary and on a rough tarmac surface (a.k.a. Greek roads).

With the power steering off it's hard to yank the steering wheel around, I will try it though...

Well, it looks like the good ol' Megane never gets rid of his nasty habits :-) My variable steering stopped working and came up on the tester with a "speed signal fault" trouble code, which should mean that there's no feed from the speed sensor to the UCH/power steering computer. Strange thing is though that the speedometer is working and also the door lock function upon taking off also works no problem (the function that automatically blocks the doors when reaching 10-20kph or so). So i'm puzzled again. There's a loudness function on the radio which automatically increases the speaker volume when vehicle speed is increasing and that doesn't work anymore either. Garage says to change the UCH / steering column but I'm not prepared to waste 1000 euros or so on suppositions. Do you guys have any clue about this? Could it be wiring?

Isn't it forum rules not to start a second topic on the same problem? There isn't much else to it, but I'll summarize: power adaptive steering and loudness function on the radio don't work anymore, which means the steering wheel doesn't stiffen up with speed, it remains light, and radio volume doesn't turn up with speed increase. Auto door lock upon taking off is working, speedometer is working also, which means speed signal is received by UCH I guess. Thanks.
