Steering Fault

Hi,

I really need help. My Renault Megane 2, year 2006, showed STEERING FAULT. Before that, I didn't start the car for 5-6 days. Steering is really hard to move. Tried to remove the battery and to reset it, still same fault. Mechanic told me to change the steering column. Can it be something else, like the fuse or battery?
