Loose Floppy gear Stick..now stuck in gear

Loose floppy gear stick...car is now stuck in gear.

Haven't been using the car for quite a while (months in fact).
Drove it off drive, but couldn't get it into reverse gear. I also had some problems with getting into 3rd gear and in general the gear stick has felt a bit stiff
Ive had some difficulties in the past getting it into reverse gear. Fiddled around with it for a few minutes i.e. repeatedly tried using some force to get into reverse, and then the gear stick just went loose.

The gear stick will not engage or bite at all now and I think its now stuck in 4th gear.

What do I do, what can i do? It's a big job isn't it? Hardly likely I could fix this myself is it? Im not very mechanically minded when it comes to cars.
BTW : car has done around 120,000miles, 2003. Never really had any problems. I'll be a bit sad to just scrap the car although I was thinking of getting rid of it because I just don't drive it .
