Really need help, running out of options

Postby Stealthk80 » Thu May 02, 2019 10:16 pm

Hi all, my first post here and not for good reasons unfortunately. We recently acquired an R26, great car, however I became suspicious of a fault on the drive him from collecting it.
The petrol gauge was on 1/4 and my wife filled the car, £30 to fill from a quarter, slightly suspicious I out it down to a small tank at the time. Later that week I started the the car and noticed the gauge had dropped from full to 1/4 over the space of a few miles. We drive it a few more miles, wife went to fill up and £15 filled it.
So now I started thinking something is wrong, I replaced the sender unit but the problem remained. I had the sender in and out a few times and low and behold the tank distorted. At this time we gauge would occasionally drop to below empty and the service light would come on.
The tank was leaking so the car went into a local independent specialists to have the tank replaced they also replaced the 1 week old sender unit...
When I picked the car up, I started it and the gauge dropped off and the service light came on again. Slightly frustrated I left the car there for them to do some wiring checks. I got the car back a few days later with them carrying out a repair to the connector by the passenger seat. Petrol gauge in full...
We drove it 54 miles and the gauge dropped again to quarter at the point. From there it appeared to act normal eg from 1/4 to red empty line and the petrol light came on. I arranged to drop the car back to the garage for further checks. My wife out another £10 in and the gauge went back up to full. The next day driving over to the garage after around 12 miles my wife seen the gauge drop from full to a 1/4 whilst driving it.

We have just got the car back after 2 weeks of wiring checks and the gauge was on full, surprise. We have now done around 90 miles and it's still on full.

Does anyone have any damn clue what this could be? At the moment the garage want us to drive 100 miles, fill it record how much we put in and then again for 150 miles. I'm not sure what this will accomplish.

The garage say there's nothing else left in the system other than the instrument panel.

Really stumped on this now, any help appreciated

The gauge on my 54plate 1.5 dci is all over the place like most of the electrics, really spoils a potentially good car, I just fill to brim then 600 mls do the same again, don,t need the gauge.

I guess it's fine in a 1.5 diesel, problem is we aren't sure what miles it will do on a tank as It has been remapped as well

So basically, you are asking how to "clock" a Megane?
