poor MPG and 'whirry' auto transmission - linked???

Hi, I bought a pristine Renault Megane 1.6 VVT Dynamique Proactive 5dr 2008 with 32,000 miles on the clock.
It's had a full dealer service including new cam belt.
Looks good
Drives Good
Buuuut . . .
Fuel Economy (petrol) diabiolical (lucky if I get 30 mpg pootling about on my own.
The auto transmission seems very 'whirry' to my ear and has a habit of staying in second a lot.
I've spoken to the dealer about it who insists all this is normal.
Tonight it started making faint gear crunch sounds going uphill in 3rd (with it flipped over to hybrid manual.
Anyone got any ideas?
It has about two weeks left on the warranty . . .
PS this is a cut and paste from m y 'hello' which I wrote before realising you're supposed to put problems here - sorry
