Poor Cold Starting.

Postby R5GTT » Thu Jan 24, 2019 10:13 pm

I have a 2.0 dci GT which is difficult to start in this cold weather. I have replaced the Glow Plugs and the timer relay, and the problem still remains.
There are no fault codes other than Df165 which I don't think is related to this issue, also the glow plug light only remains lit for a few seconds.
Any help would be helpful
Thanks

Hi,
have you tested to see if there is power getting to the glow plugs.

Pull one of the caps from a glow plug and use a test lamp to see if it lights up when the glow plugs should be on.

I would recommend using a test lamp rather than a multimeter as you need to see if there is current along with the voltage.

Cheers.

That was great, however was the fix replacement glow plugs or the software update or both?
If it involved a software update where can i get the update and also what about availability of the correct Glow Plugs?

I read it as he had 12 volt plugs fitted and they should have been the 7 volt plugs because that's what his software needed.

I'm guessing the plugs you have are 12 volt (they are normally marked as 11 volts).

Despite what I said earlier about the test lamp I would check with a volt meter what voltage you have at the plug caps.

Cheers.

No point in doing that until you establish which plugs you need (7 or 12 volt) hence taking a voltage reading at the plug cap.

If you fit the 7v plugs and your system is 12v they won't last long.

Joe 12
I agree however I have purchased a set of them and having tested the ones I removed and found them all to work fine by checking resistance and also by putting them across a battery and they all glowed. I suspect that those removed and the replacements to be 12 volts as I still have the same symptons with both sets, I will check the supply voltage to see what it is? I will also speak to a supplier tomorrow to see if they know of the correct ones to fit. I am certain this is where my fault lies as the car performs normally once started
Thanks again I'll keep you posted of my findings. :-)

The working voltage of the glow plug is normally written on it, 11v is written on the one I have here.

Yeah, let us know how you get on.

Cheers.
