Help - Cruise control not working

Postby furryandrew » Tue Jul 03, 2018 3:04 am

Can anyone help?

For the past few months my cruise control on my 2007 Megane convertible has been cutting out now and again when I'm on the motorway etc. Last week it stopped working completely - Although the cruise & limiter dashboard lights still work (and the horn & audio controls on the steering wheel too), when I press any of the steering wheel cruise controls nothing happens.

I thought it might be the brake pedal sensor, but when I took it to my local garage today they said that was ok, but they did a diagnostics test and told me the central rear brake light LED strip on top of the boot wasn't working and believed that was the source of the problem. They told me it wasn’t the LED strip itself but a break somewhere in all the wiring that leads to that light, but told me finding out exactly where was something they couldn't do and required a car electrical specialist.

However, having had a google on various Megane forums for cruise control problems I came across a post that said that if you also have any clicking when turning around the steering wheel (which i have noticed a bit of lately) and the airbag warning light comes on (mine has been permanently on for a long time due to a rear seatbelt pre-tensioner fault) then the problem is the steering wheel clock spring and the entire airbag squib with the indicator/wiper stalks have to be replaced.

After I found this out I went back to my local garage to ask them what the exact diagnostics fault codes were. They told me they are –
DF026 – sun roof - solenoid valve activation – too long
DF085 – sun roof - Defect mode

These seem odd as (a) I don’t have a sunroof but a convertible roof which is working fine, and (b) they’re not related to the brake light. However the guys at the garage told me it’s all part of the same wiring, and assure me its nothing to do with the steering wheel clock spring as that would have generated its own fault code.

Can anyone confirm whether they are right and/or what I should do next?

Thanks
Andy

(PS. Does anybody have a copy of the Megane PDF workshop manual? I checked the various links in the manuals section but none of them seem to work anymore.)

Hi,
l looked up those fault codes and they seem to relate to injection or auto box features, no mention of sunroof.
l just fixed my high level brake light and it was the connections gone rusty, l imagine it's common.
If there's a noise from the steering wheel, bet your boots it's the clock spring, you need to check it out.
If you want to diy, there's plenty on you tube.
If you replace the clock spring, make sure you get the right one, check the part number on your old one, be sure the seller knows you've got cruise etc.
Good luck
Bob.

Thanks Bob. Not sure what injection or auto box features mean, I'm not very well up on car mechanics/electrics these days. Do you think they would affect the cruise control?

The guys at my garage told me those fault codes related to sunroof but I notice they didn't write down "sunroof" on the note they gave me - just solenoid valve activation/ defect mode. It all sounds very confusing. I'd like to take it to an electrical specialist but am a bit wary of doing that without knowing what the problem is first.
It sounds feasible that the problem affecting the cruise control is a break in the wiring loom that leads to the LED brake light on the boot as the way the wiring is designed it can easily get stretched or trapped when the roof is being automatically folded into the boot, and there is evidence that this has been fixed/taped up before, yet those fault codes don't seem to back that up and I don't understand why the guys at my garage seem to think they do.

They did remove the LED brake light to check it out (I was watching from the waiting room) so I would hope they would have noticed if it was rusty or damaged.

Sometimes my steering wheel "clicks" when I'm turning it, particularly when I've just started her up, often it doesn't. Do you think it is something that is likely to deteriorate?

Many thanks
Andy

Hi,
there's a couple of things wrong with the garage diagnosis.
They say that the clock spring would generate it's own code yet you've got the airbag light on and they haven't picked up any code for that.
I've a suspicion that they only have diagnostics for engine and drive train and not for body.
The two codes they picked up could have been old stored codes. I suspect yours is auto because you didn't mention the clutch switch for the cruise. If it is, that explains the solenoid code.
I have full diagnostics and it's important when a problem develops to erase all codes in case they are old glitches, run the car and read again to see what is present now.
I doubt that the brake light affects the cruise control, I've never read a thread that the cruise don't work when a brake bulb is gone.
When l did my third brake light l tested the strip off the car and it worked, found that the live was active when the brakes pressed and tested the earth ok. I cut out the connectors and soldered the wires direct and fixed it. All this takes a bit of patience and testing that the garage doesn't seem to have time for or not the common sense know how. I don't think that this is an MOT failure though.(you could look for a break in wires where they come into the boot)
If you've got a noise at the steering wheel the clock spring needs looking at, it can't be completely broken or the other controls couldn't work, but it needs testing for continuity at all wires and eliminating.
The air bag light needs sorting for the MOT at least, how do you know it's a rear seat pre-tensioner, while the light is on, that could be the clock spring also.
Sorry that there isn't a quick easy solution but l don't rate your present garage and if I were you I'd find another place recommended by people.
Good luck
Bob.

Thanks for replying again Bob.

"I suspect yours is auto because you didn't mention the clutch switch for the cruise. If it is, that explains the solenoid code."
No its a manual. When I said they checked the brake switch I believe they would also check the clutch switch, apologies i wasn't specific about that.
But how does it explain the solenoid code?

They didn't mention the airbag code to me, but that was probably because they knew I was already aware of it as it was coming on before they MOT'd the car back in March. At the time I was thinking it was probably just a loose cable or connection (as I've read thats a common fault) and I was expecting them to fix it, but bizarrely they put the passenger airbag override on and just passed it! When I asked why they hadn't fixed it they said that it was the passenger-side rear seatbelt-pretensioner and would be a costly fix (would it? I don't know) so they claimed they overrode it to save me money! (...yeah, I know, I'm losing faith in them too!)

I think I'd better go back to them again and ask for the specific airbag code, maybe that might throw some extra light on the matter?

Is it possible you could explain the relevance of the "injection and auto box features", and what "defect mode" means?

Many thanks for your help
Andy

Hi,
there are more than one fault given for both these codes.
As for the DF085, not being auto, it means 'injection-fuel pump relay control circuit' ( l assumed it was auto, sorry )
As for the DF026 there are several selections
None, however mention sunroof.
Google 'OBD11 diagnostics.Trouble codes description for RENAULT ' there you will see all the possibilities given for any code.
I'm afraid nothing is simple nowadays, it's a bit like 'take your pick' with the DF026

Thanks for your reply Bob. Sorry for the lengthy silence but I'm really despairing about how to resolve all this.

I called my old MOT garage to ask them for the SRS fault code they saw, and without even checking the receptionist immediately replied they don't keep them, even though I knew from the previous week that they actually do! So I think this is the last business they'll ever be getting from me - particularly as I paid them £40 for that diagnostic test!

So I've invested £50 in my own diagnostic checker (Launch CReader 6011) to check it over. It gives me the following SRS fault codes (and no others) -

DF239 Rear inertia reel circuit, short circuit DTS status: Memory
DF071 Driver's front air bag circuit 2, open circuit DTS status: Active
DF072 Driver's front air bag circuit 1, open circuit DTS status: Active

1. Do you happen to know what the difference is between status:Memory & status:Active? The reader manual doesn't give any clues.

2. I'm guessing the DF239 is the fault my garage have been aware of for some time. They told me the problem was the rear pre-tensioner, but my reader says its the “Rear inertia reel circuit”. So I looked the code up online (obdii.pro/en/code/DF239) to clarify and it says “Airbag/pretensioners - Rear seat belt retractors circuit” – So does that mean its the inertia reel or the pre-tensioner? %-)

3. The DF071 & DF072 are new fault codes (grrr!) and I'm guessing are related to the recent clicking I've had whenever I turn my steering wheel at slow speeds. But do you think these will also be the cause of the cruise control not working (I'm guessing that's likely, but if so it's strange my garage never picked up these codes) or do you reckon those other mysterious codes (DF026 & DF085) the garage picked up are still more likely the problem? %-)

3. My reader didn't come up with those DF026 & DF085 codes the garage got, but could that be because my reader only reads the engine, SRS, & ABS systems?

4. My gut feeling is that the cruise control problem is most likely related to those steering wheel airbag fault codes and clicking sounds and that will require replacement of the clock-spring/airbag-squib and/or drivers airbag. And if so my best option is probably to get the parts and the rear seat–belt part 2nd hand on ebay and get a different local garage to swap them over. What do you reckon?

Thanking you in advance for your help which is most appreciated :-)
Andy

Anybody else got any thoughts/ideas that can help with this?
Is the replacement of the clock-spring/airbag-squib the most likely fix?

Hi,
go with what your reader tells you now, the old codes from the garage could have been old glitches stored say, if the voltage was ever low or battery disconnected.
Your reader is directing you to the clock spring and a rear seat belt or airbag.
The clock spring has to be eliminated, then see what happens and take it from there.
I suspect 'active' means permanent and 'memory' means intermittent, can't be sure, but that would suggest to me that the rear seat belt issue is a poor
contact in the wiring somewhere.
How to do the clock spring is on you tube ( any renault will do) l did mine a few years ago £20 off ebay and been fine, use a 100% ebayer.
Battery disconnected, wheels dead straight and new clock spring in the middle of it's turns. Don't forget yours is with cruise control.
good luck
Bob.

Hi Andy,

Have your car fixed. I am having the same issue. Can you please come back with your diagnostics please.
