Hi i own a 2006 1.6 16VVT 81500mls on speedo i have owned the car 12 months now. Awhile back it started making a awful noise when starting from cold not every time about 3times a week i thought it was the starter motor sticking but advice on here started me thinking of the dephaser gear at the time i never heard of it. After coming into a few bob recently i went to my local garage to get it sorted rather than book it in he suggested changing the oil first has it might be the oil slow in getting into the top of the engine. My question is, can this happen the noise only lasts seconds. I just want it sorted...thanks

Hi,
I guess if it's due for an oil change, that would eliminate one thing any way.
The dephaser works on an oil pressure system using solenoids to open oil valves to alter the timing slightly, as I understand it.
It would be the first port of call, so to speak.
Let us know how it goes.
Bob.

If you can afford it do the whole timing belt, pulleys, water pump, dephaser pulley, aux belt while your at it.
At 86k its due anyway. Might cost you £500 with labour though.

Hi thanks for the replies..water pump and belt done 3000 miles ago i never knew at the time about these pulleys, I plan to do a oil change just to rule that out if the noise still exists i will get the dephaser pulley changed. Will keep you all posted. Thanks
