P0299 Turbo Underboost Issue

Postby CraigGunn » Fri Dec 01, 2017 12:59 pm

Hi Everyone

Hope somebody may be able to help please, I've searched the forum for similar issues without luck (apologies if I have missed a post on this and it is a duplicate)

My partner's 2013 1.5dci Megane's engine warning light came on with 2 warning notes - around 'checking injection system' and an issue with emission system (can't remember exact wording). I hooked up my dad's little OBD reader and it gave an error code of P0299, relating to turbo underboost. The turbo certainly still kicks in, so I'm guessing this is more of a sensor issue.

Has anyone else experienced this? I can't see any similar issues on the net, but guessing it may be MAP sensor related, not sure if there are any other sesnors/issues which may be causing this...?

Any help or advice would be really appreciated

Thanks in advance
Craig

Hi,
l'd say you're on the right track. Could be the map sensor just needs cleaning and check connections, needs eliminating.
Should the fault persist and a new sensor doesn't fix it, when you research don't just stick to renault, micra's and other cars use these engines and most modern diesels all work on the same principals.
Don't forget to clear the code when you've looked at it and see what happens.
Good luck
Bob.

Hi Bob

That's great - really appreciate your help and the quick response. Reassuring to know I'm on the right track, thank you

That makes sense about widening the research if further issues - hadn't realised that to be honest (bit of a novice). Will order a new part and take it from there...

Thanks very much again!

Hi Nikolacm

I did indeed resolve this and meant to update the thread, sorry. I'll caveat this with I'm not a mechanic mind... but I figured it was down to one of three things at the time.
a) DPF needed regenerating (took to a garage paid for this - didn't work)
b) MAP sensor was faulty/needed replacing (same as above)
c) Turbo boost sensor was faulty/needed replacing - I bought a replacement (only £30 or so) and fitted it myself (as it's literally just 2 screws and very easily accessible)

As it happened, I had the same issue come back up this year, so immediately ordered another turbo boost sensor, thinking it must be that again (due to a cheaper/short lasting sensor I'd bought). It turned out to be due to a broken pipe leading into the dpf which (having taken to a DPF specialist in the NE that I'd absolutely recommend) apparently was extremely uncommon (and a nightmare for him to access and fix). He reckoned it was likely done by 'a' above (as, I should have mentioned, the garage removed pipes and 'scrubbed' them rather than more common methods for regenerating a DPF). So I guess that would be a 4th possibility, more likely only if you have gone down route 'a' already.

Lastly, and sorry for the long response, if you've tried other fixes but not the turbo boost sensor and your turbo still isn't kicking in, I've a boost sensor here (fit for Megane III 1.5dci's) that I'd be happy to send to you to try use to see if that resolves it if you wish? It's the one I unnecessarily replaced earlier in the year, it's just sat in the garage so wouldn't expect any money etc for it, would rather try help. Just let me know if so and we'll arrange for me to send it

Stay safe
Craig

Thanks Craig for your detailed reply! What I did I very similar to your steps, only i also had my (perfectly fine working) turbo refurbished for a lot of money, and the fault came on again after just a few kilometres. Replaced MAP sensor, no luck, paid for DPF regenerating, again it came on. No one told me about turbo boost sensor, so I never replaced that. My car is Megane 2013, 1.5 dci, 81 kW. Could you please send me the picture of where this sensor goes (or a part number) , so I can ask my dealership if they have it, then buy it and replace it. I think it would be too much of a hassle for you to send it to me, as I live in Montenegro.
Would it be also possible to send me the pictures of the location of this pipe that needed replacement, or the picture of the pipe itself, so I can ask my garage to try to access it and fix it.
This has been such a nightmare for me for so long, and it has cost me a fortune already, but was never fixed, so I drive my car with this fault on, as it goes like a perfectly good car, without any problems, but due to this fault I'm unable to sell it!
I would very much appreciate if you could help me with this in any way you can. If I manage to fix this problem then I would not sell it but keep it for myself, as it otherwise has been a perfect car for me. Incredibly economical and useful. I have done 300 000 km with it with no major problems. However, this last year has been a real nightmare.
Best regards,
Nikola

Hi... no worries at all, I can relate to your pain and frustrations! Happy just to try and help... hopefully these links work for a picture of the turbo boost sensor (also sometimes called a boost pressure sensor)...

Unfortunately I can't send a picture of where it is located in the engine bay as, believe it or not, the megane is currently in the garage as the gear box blew up! Hopefully we'll get it back Wednesday and will send a picture then, but essentially if you pop the bonnet it should be just above the engine - compare to the pictures above and (if it is the same layout as my partners car) then you can't miss it. It's literally two screws and an easy unclip - no mechanical or technical skills needed

P.s. - I remember requesting a quote from the Renault dealership for this and it was going to be £140 for part and fitting - I bought it online for about £30 and fitted myself within seconds, would recommend doing that too! To be honest - even with your location I really don't mind sending the above to you if you can wait a few days for delivery, just let me know.

Cheers
Craig
