How much does a cambelt change cost?

Postby q292u » Mon Sep 19, 2016 8:53 am

I'm just weighing-up the pros and cons for my Megane II..
It's the 1.6VVT one, and I'm just wondering how much servicing is actually going to cost me..

I work on "Bangernomics" principles, and a £600 Megane IS a banger. A very smart one, but a banger, so I want to minimise costs wherever possible.

It seems to me that a cambelt change would be a good insurance policy for the engine, BUT: how much would a cambelt change cost?

I'm not even considering using a Renault dealer, BTW..

Hi,
At a garage local to me on my 1.5dci, it was £310 for the cambelt and water pump all in. I'm not sure if it's any different for petrols, but it shouldn't be too much of a gap.

And believe it or not, the quote I got from Renault wasn't much more either

For my 1.9dci - recent cambelt at local French car specialist was £260 incl using original Renault parts (Cambelt, auxiliary belt and water pump). New cooling fluid too of course.

Thought that was pretty good...

Bah.

Could maybe be worth it if you plan to keep the car for a bit and it won't last (and obviously providing there's nothing else wrong ;) ). if it's cheaper for you to get another one then forget it i suppose.

On a Megane, how catastrophic is a snapped cambelt?
Are we talking a bricked engine here? (I am aware that some other cars will survive one)

As far as I know, it's game over if the cambelt goes.
