Dash lights

Hi All,
I have an 04 1.9dCi, and recently noticed that three lights on the dash light up (not sure which ones, one is blue, red and the other maybe green or orange, they go out as soon as the door is opened) when the car is left for some period of time, i.e. overnight or even after an hour shopping. I thought it was to do with the key fob being close to the car, but disproved that today by leaving it some 12ft away. The car seems to run fine otherwise, but I'm wondering for how long, as when the three lights are on, they flicker as if there is a dodgy connection somewhere. Any ideas please?
Oh, and the same three lights lit up, flickering, when I tried to use an ELM327 reader, in fact this was the first time I noticed them, and I couldn't get the reader to connect to the ECU. Not sure if this is related.
