MPG

I have a 2004 1.6 Renault Megan MK2 hatchback which is only giving me 31.3 mpg. the car has had a full service, the car is in good condition. What can I do to improve mpg.
My experience is that they aren't very good generally. I have a 1.6cc and on a good day I'll get 38 average if I'm careful.During the winter it was more like 31. My friend has a 1.6 hatch and gets slightly less than me.
If you have access to a code reader, look at the live readings on the upstream O2 sensor to ensure it is switching from 0.1 up to 0.9 volts evenly.
