Won't start! Starter is working. RPM shows 0

I did a search but couldn't find an anwser to this exact problem.

What happened: the car was parked outside a store idling just fine. Then suddenly it just died and could not be started again. Starter is working fine but the engine won't fire up. The display shows a "Check injection" message.

I performed a few tests to try and isolate the problem:

Starter is working ok. Engine is turning over when pressing the start button but the RPM gauge shows 0 rpm. (?? is it not supposed to go up when the starter spins the engine?)
I took out the spark plugs after trying several times to start with no luck expecting the plugs to be soaked in fuel, but they was all completely dry. It does not appear to inject any fuel. I then used a spark tester between the plug and coil and the coils are not giving any spark. Confirmed this with a multimeter: No voltage is beeing applied to the coils.

Any Ideas what it could be?

It's a 2003 Renault Megane 1.4 petrol.

Your 02 megane this was the change over year from the mk1 to the mk2 if you can post up your engine code it would certainly help it either starts with k4j ??? or e7j ??? The correct engine code lets 1 know if it's a mk1 or mk2 & what system it's running on

My bad, I typed in the wrong year, it's a 2003 (edited the first post now). It's a MK2. :)

At this point I'm thinking it's the crank sensor. I hooked up a obd2 scanner and the thing is that when the ignition is on the RPM shows 180 and not 0. Tried to disconnect the sensor. RPM still shows 180 ?... While cranking it goes up to 240. Won't start, I can hear some random missfiring occuring. Then it stops and rpm goes back to 180.

I tried to crank the engine with the sensor disconnected. RPM then stayed at 180 ??..

Tested the scanner on a few other cars, and RPM shows 0 when engine is not running.

What's going on here? Much seems to be pointing twards the sensor, but then why is it still showing 180 rpm with the sensor disconnected ? The RPM gauge in the dash still shows 0 all the time, even when cranking.
