Electric window motor controller!

Postby oldbury863 » Sun Apr 13, 2014 1:29 pm

My drivers side window motor has just packed up. After I unplugged the motor from the loom, I noticed the free socket feeding the motor was slightly melted around one of the pins.
I dismantled things further in the hope of carrying out a repair, but was shocked at the state of the circuit board inside. It looks as though it could have been capable of a major fire.
The pin just fell out when I removed the housing, and circuit board has turned to ash where the pin was once located! I would upload some photos but it seems all but impossible on this forum.....
Has anyone else had this issue? If there are others, maybe there should be a recall on this before someones car DOES catch fire.

This happened to me also, and a lot more I suspect due to bad design. I think mine was caused by water collecting at bottom of door, and soaking up the wiring loom and into the unit, or water dripping off the glass onto the unit. Either way its not good :?

I want to keep this car for some time so decided not to replace with the original temick controller but with a more simpler reliable unit from ebay.

The simplified "cube" controller does no have the anti-pinch function, which will damage the mechanical part (and is also unsafe). It is much easier to clean the connector and apply silicone grease.

Any major thermal damage only occurs after people trying to operate windows after they have displayed signs of failure. So, repair the regulator as soon as it starts playing up, "starts" in the key word.

As it is a known design fault, everyone, I think, is supposed to clean these connectors and apply a dielectric grease to them. Use a freezer bag to protect the controller and the motor fro water coming from above. Note, freezer bags are made of a more suitable plastic than any other bags.
