Maximum Mileage - Cam Belt Part 2?

Postby CrumpetMonster » Tue Mar 11, 2014 11:53 am

Hi all,

I have a general question regarding mileage of my 2004 Megane, 1.6VVTi, unleaded.

As it stands, it's now on 143000, I service it each year but I know it's coming up close to a cam-belt change (last done at 75000). I don't know whether to pay the cam-belt cost (probably around the £500 mark if memory serves me well) with the next service & MOT (due in a couple of weeks), or whether that's a waste of money and start looking at the second-hand car market instead.

Anyone with high mileage stats or stories to help me out?

Cheers :rock

Hi all,

I thought I would reply to my own post  just in case there are any high-milers out there. My 1.6VVTi sailed through its MOT a couple weeks ago, and was due to go in for its cam-belt and dephaser pulley change next week, but alas, it isn't to be :cry . Now at 145,500 the gearbox differential has gone, which means a replacement and new clutch etc would be approx £1000, plus the cambelt/dephaser of £500 and I've decided that I've got my money's worth out of the Megane and will be saying goodbye.

I have been averaging 48MPG recently (new route to work), but generally hovered around the 44MPG throughout the years I've owned it which is far greater than I ever expected, and the last 70000 miles of ownership were certainly less painful than the first 75000 miles. I've certainly not got a great deal good to say about Renault in general but overall, the car was a good car. When I got the car past 100,000 I decided to run her in to the ground expecting her to break at any moment, but to be perfectly honest, she's given me another couple of years of good running, at a great saving to me. I've even lived in and slept in the Megane for a time now and then. She's still got a great engine really and in fairly good condition elsewhere, so I'm going to put her on EBay soon as a parts/scrap deal when I get my next motor sorted.

So, thanks for the help over the years to the mod's and posters on Owners Forum. All the very best to the Megane's and owners out there :rock

I doubt I'll get another Renault until a few reliability and design features are re-designed back out. I love them to drive (as I did the Clio before), but dislike the overall maintenance experience of it which is "frustrating" to say the least.

I opted for a Corsa (paid for it today, get it tomorrow), but the Megane had the last laugh on me :D . The car is "driveable", I've been using it to search for my new car, but taking it steady. Anyway, after the purchase and back at home, I clear out the Megane of maps, mats, sat nav etc.... in that time, the car now won't start :D . A quick search suggests fuses or battery or starter motor. I've had a look and can't find the fault, so I'm not going to try and fix it now, I'm just going to make a sheepish and grovelling call to the garage tomorrow and ask to send a tow-truck instead of a driver and hope the trade-in price isn't affected :banghead .

Anyway, this is my last post. Many thanks once again and all the very best 8-)

Silver Megane 2004 1.6VVTi of Gloucestershire, 145000 miles good fun, out :cry
