Belt problems maybe...

Postby AgentDRL » Wed Jan 29, 2014 3:52 pm

Hi all,

Mrs has a Megane 1.6 Dymanique, 2003 with 64k miles.

The dephaser pulley and timing belt kit done 2 weeks ago for £320. Everything seems fine until a whirring sound started. It's there when the engine is on and is idle, and gets louder when she revvs the engine (like having a budgie under your bonnet!). It does sometime disappear altogether when she's been on a decent drive with it, but it's there all the time now.

The sound was there slightly before the dephaser and timing belt was done. The sound had completely disappeared when she picked the car up, but returned a couple of days later. Currently it's been cold and damp for weeks where we live (and everywhere else in the UK for that matter, lol), so I did wonder if that had any bearing on how the timing belt sounds or the alternator belt. And if the car needs to be driven for a certain amount of miles etc.

Apologies, I did look for this topic before I started this one, but I couldn't find an answer as such.

Cheers.

Was the water pump replaced at the same time as the belts?

It was, yes. Forgot to mention that. The old water pump was leaking apparently. The alternator belt wasn't touched.

It is impossible to not touch the alternator belt. Furthermore, removed belts are always replaced according to the factory manual.

I mean in the context of the alternator belt was not replaced for a new one to my knowledge. Definitely not on the receipt for the work..

Is the cambelt kit OEM? Were there any bolts included in the bill?

Going to find this out. No bolts included on the bill.

Other than the noise, the car runs fine

The bolts themselves do not squeal and do not cause noise. This is about the quality of the job. Who knows, may be they didn't replace the tensioner, or did something wrong with the alternator belt (which the did),or didn't check the alternator bearing, or something else.

Worn alternator belts can squeal, mainly when the engine is cold and you rev it. The tensioner can make noise if it wasn't replaced. The aircon pulley with clutch. I'm just guessing.
