1.5 dci starting problem

Postby johnna » Mon Dec 16, 2013 8:50 pm

Good evening all.

My situation:
I run a 1.5dci 100bhp Megane. A week ago, on a small trip to the shops near work, I tried to start it again (hot start) and it cranked, then displayed "injection fault" and the stop light. I left it there and phoned the RAC. They arrived five hours later (as requested). It started first time! Grrrr! The RAC chap read the codes and mentioned fuel starvation due to low fuel pressure.

His advice was swap the fuel filter, but to be aware that sticky injectors are common. He suggested that one injector was sticking when warm, but not when cold. I don't know enough about piezo crystals to know if this is accurate. (In fact Delphi items may not even have the crystals!!!)

I ordered the genuine Renault filter and as I waited for it to be delivered the starting got worse. Also, under high revs and strain the injection fault and stop lights would come on then disappear.

I did a leak off test with the car running cylinders 1&3 were low and level with each other, 2 slightly raised and 4 almost twice as much diesel was leaked off.

Eventually, cold starts were a no-go and the Megane would only start with Easy-Start.

I have located a breaker who will sell good used injectors for £40 each (he states they are temperamental and will refund if they do not work properly if fitted correctly).

I know my ecu will need the specific injector codes in order to run again.

So my queries:
1, The breaker lists the injectors with the code: EJBR01801Z 8200049873 Is this the flow rate code or simply the part number?
2, Where is the flow rate code sticker on the injector? Can I view mine in situ?
3, How cheap/ easy is it to assemble the hardware/ software to use Renault CLIP as a DIY option?
4, How much should I expect to pay a specialist to code an injector?
5, Can anyone recommend a Delphi or independent Renault garage in the North East near to Chester-le-street I could use?
6, Are the cylinders numbered 1,2,3,4 starting at the cambelt end or from the bellhousing end? I read somewhere they are reversed from the traditional way...

All answers gratefully accepted!

EJBR01801Z 8200049873 are the part numbers, Delphy and Renault. The same are used in Nissan. The flow rate should be stamped on the injector itself.

Chinese Clip one can buy on ebay. People say it is about £100.

Cylinder #1 is on the flywheel side.

Hi, what year is your 1.5dci?
You don't need to understand how piezo (or coil and magnet) injectors work, only that they do or don't.
To buy a scanner that will allow injector codes to be located and amended would cost several hundred pounds.
Most little garages will have a Snap-On scanner that will allow amendment. Enquire at your local garages if they have such an instrument. it's an easy job and should take less than 30 minutes at most.
Did you change your fuel filter? If yes, presumably it made no difference. Interesting little job wasn't it?
The 1.5dci is used in various models of Renault or Nissan but the injector numbers are not always the same. The number you quoted above is the same as our car but often the final letter (Z) varies. Does this make a difference? I would like to know.
To identify the part no of your existing set would involve removing one - it can't be read in situ. Take care when removing as grit from around the injector body will fall onto the seat (and probably into the engine). Do you have access to an air compressor? If so, give the area behind the injector a good high pressure blast. Before fitting a replacement injector, the seat in the cyl head must be scrupulously clean or compression will leak through. Grit on the seat is difficult to remove because it is recessed.
Buying injectors from a breaker is risky. If the car was damaged (ask!), fair enough but if not, bear in mind that many Megs of this age have been written off because of injection problems. The best of luck....mate!

The filter, yes what a pig of a job. No doubt somebody thought it was a an 'elegant design solution'. I happened to buy a pattern part first and it was brittle rubbish.

Injector differences, I not some are top feed (like mine) and others are side feed.

Injector no.1 is in a local Delphi service station, Durham Motor services, for a re-con. Their ceiling charge is £120, so considering a second hand injector is £40, coding is £50 or to set myself up with Renault CLIP is £150, I feel the recon is better value. Removal was surprisingly easy too. I also whipped of the EGR and cleaned that. It was thick!

As for the breaker parts, I imagine inactivity isn't good for injectors either, even from crashed cars.

Fixed! 1st time starter with no warning lights at all! The only mishap was me dropping the crush washer behind the starter. The garage gave me a free replacement (seen as its Christmas!). I'm realty chuffed.
The garage that reconditioned the injector is Durham Motor Services, Beamish. 0191 3700205. Highly recommended!
