1.9 dci fuel pump not priming

Postby scott9951 » Wed Jul 17, 2013 7:55 pm

hello all,
just done an engine transplant on a megane 2 1.9 dci.
all went pretty well until it came time to start it.
car started 1st press of the button & ran well until the fuel in pipes ran out.
primed the pump again, got rid of all the air we could see in the pipe. priming bulb went hard so thought ok all done.
car started ran for a few seconds then cut out.
if when starting the car you continue to pump the bulb the car runs longer.
there is fuel getting to the injectors but if remove the pipe to each injector it has hardly a trickle coming on while trying to start.
tried more injectors, changed piping & sensors but still no change.
injector fault comes up on dash after a few trys at starting.
connected clip & got the fault code p0089
i read an article with similiar faults & a change of crank sensor sorted it.
can the pump itself get airlocked?
what bar pressure should there be at the rail?
any ideas?
thanx for reading

Hi scott9951,

You may want to read the manual in the sticky thread first. It explains many things.

If the engine can run while you are pumping the primer, the problem might be with air getting into the fuel line. The fuel lines in this car operate under negative pressure and suck air in through any pin hole or something like that. When the engine stops, do you see air in the clear pipe to the HP pump? Then ask where this air is coming from...

The rail operates at a very high pressure in excess of 1000 bar. Volume-wise it does not push much, but the pressure when everything is connected is high and sufficient to inject the fuel under your skin. The exact figures depend on the engine. Do you know the model code of your 1.9dci engine? If you don't, then look in the manual for hints.

changed crank sensor = no change
if i press the start button the engine just turns.
if i press the start button then pump the priming bulb the engine runs until i stop squeezing the bulb.
that ring a bell with anyone?

f9q, of course, but what variant of f9q? They use slightly different injection equipment. If it is an 8 valve 120ps engine, then everything is Bosch, and the rail pressure is not as high as in later models. Well, it is only important when reading the manual - a kind of academic interest.

In practice, I think, you have diagnosed the problem. It has nothing to do with sensors, and has everything to do with where the fuel line meets the pump. There are no air bubbles, as you have confirmed, so the options are either a blockage or the pump. Failing pumps usually deposit metal shavings in the fuel filter - have a look there...

It makes sense, assuming you've checked that the fuel is freely flowing. Good luck.

Hi
I own the same car with f9q engen and It started after I replace the aluminium pipe from the water pump, then when starting it does crank but couldn't send the fuel to the injector. When I check the fuel pump bulb there was no fuel and tried to prime it but none.
I thought maybe is the fuel sender unit which I replaced with the new one but still there no hardening on the fuel pump bulb.

Any suggestions
