The service light and message "electronic fault" came on without warning. Car has been regularly serviced with 4200km to next service. Car is running fine but cruise control does not come on, although it was working fine before the message came on. I have reset the service light which changed the reading to next service but fault message and service light still come on. I've checked all fuses and all seems ok. Worried about wife continuing to use car in case it is serious and causes more damage.
Anyone had this problem before or what else can I check.

What was the regularity of servicing? If 2 years or 18000 miles, then the car is closing to the end of its life...

"Electronic Fault" is usually about a computer or network malfunctioning. Check the cover on the headlight access hatch on the left front wheel arch liner just in case. If the cover is missing or the liner damaged, then the block UPC on the left side under the bonnet may be damaged with water. I am assuming the battery is new, and you have checked its terminals and the fuses.

Services were regular and battery is good. I disconnected the battery and the fault message and service light went off when car was restarted. After driving one kilometre the message and light came on again

Check the cover on the access hatch.
