Megane GT DCi whine
Hi guys,
I searched on here (and other Renault forums) for my problem but none seem to match what I'm experiencing.
My 2007 GT DCi which has done 36k, has developed a strange whine when I go over 50 mph (in 3,4,5,6 gears) that stops when the clutch is dipped.
The bizarre thing is when on the motorway, there is a sweet spot when adjusting the accelerator pedal, where the whine goes. If i ease off the pedal it comes back and if i apply more pressure it comes back. Its gotten louder over the past few weeks and is extremely annoying on long drives (have to have the radio on 25 too drown it out)
So far I'm thinking it could be the Turbo bearing or clutch bearing, but I'm not an expert on these things and haven't got the money to be throwing at it too change countless parts to try and solve it as I'm getting married soon.
I'm hoping someone can help narrow it down for me as I've heard the horror stories of Turbo failures wrecking engines

Check gearbox oil, or have it checked for you. As you will have to spend time on this anyway, changing oil to something like Motul Gear 300 75w90 is advisable. I hope it is not late yet... I bought mine from opieoils. Do not try random stuff - these gearboxes need oil that is thin when cold.

Re: Megane GT DCi whine
Thanks for the reply
Will get that checked when I can.
At first I thought it was road noise from the tires, but as I said it goes when the clutch is dipped, and has got progressively louder over time.
Noises are such a pain too diagnose

Re: Megane GT DCi whine
Had the gearbox oil checked and topped up a little and the noise is still present
I'm guessing I'm going too have to get the Turbo checked for the bearing, unless anyone has any other suggestions?
Thanks

Record the noise and stick it on youtube.

That's the next thing on my list to do. I'll try and do that tonight hopefully.

Re: Megane GT DCi whine
I managed to get out and try and record the "whine" in question.
The video isn't great as I was holding the phone in my left hand and changing gear. You'll also have to filter out the rattles from the dash (they drive me bonkers as well)

In the video I say when the whine is present, just so you all know Its also a LOT louder than it sounds in the video.

Re: Megane GT DCi whine
Hi Ryan,
This sounds like a transmission whine. If it is the case, it can be cured either by changing the oil or the gearbox... Try the oil which I listed - the gearbox will feel much better. It is Ester based.

Re: Megane GT DCi whine
I agree with Alex. The whine is proportional to the road speed so far as I can tell. Service the transmission and see if it still sounds like straight cut gears. I have no idea if the GT has a magnetic drain plug, but if it has, check it for metal shavings. Hope there are none.
Excellent video, by the way. I think we should have more of these to aid diagnostics.

Re: Megane GT DCi whine
Thanks guys
As soon as my wedding is out the way i'll take it to my local garage and get them too change the oil to the one you recommended, until then earplugs it is lol.
You're too kind about the video dave i didn't see the point of recording it without pointing out which noise i was refering too in the actual video. Trying to explain it afterwards, defeats the point of making a video lol

I like to think that we can tell the difference between a turbo spooling up and something else

Re: Megane GT DCi whine
Cheers dave,
I'll post in here once I've got the gearbox oil changed, and whether it cured my whine.

Re: Megane GT DCi whine
Did you get that whine cured?
I also have a 2007 2.0dci GT and have the exact same whine I heard from your sound clip. Mine has covered 78k miles and started the whine about 8wks ago. It's driving me mad. I've swooped the tyres round and had the wheel bearings checked and still it persists.
Can you let me know what caused the whine if yours is fixed please?
Thanks
Paul

Re: Megane GT DCi whine
Change the oil as I wrote earlier. You are causing damage to the transmission every day.
The original oil in Meg2 gearboxes is very thin, which is not good for the diff.
