hi everyone, just a bit of advice needed been out in car it seems fine on a normal run but if turning slow and moving slow in a straight line in forward or reversing and turning on full lock, and turn wheel side to side then you get a clunking noise. any advice would be greatfull

usually this is the top mounts of the suspension strut...

stop the car and turn the wheels from full left to rull right, if the sounds is there probably is that supports you need to change

is this very expensive, its the r26 f1

I have no knowledge of that particular type of car. However, basic trouble shooting (and the manual) might help; it it important to confirm the source of the problem before buying parts.

Simple things you can do are:

a) replicate the problem and isolate it where possible
b) turn the wheels from lock to lock and observe the spring movement (which should be smooth and not jerky)
c) inspect the ball joints / wishbones / other parts / springs (especially for missing parts / cracks)
d) jack up the front and rock the wheels to see if there is any play
e) bounce the car to determine if the shocks are faulty

and many more ideas.

On a standard Megane, the top mounts are accessed by removing the trim below the wipers, but you will have to also unbolt it from the lower link in order to remove it (from below). Once removed from the vehicle, the top mount can be rotated by hand and is faulty if it is stiff or makes a noise.

Do NOT remove the centre bolt that holds the spring tension without using spring compressors first. The springs have enough energy to kill or seriously maim. Be careful.

I did one last week and on the R26 it's normally the top spring mount rather than the top mount and allows the spring to become unseated. It could also be one of the many drop links or tie bars to so id advise getting it looked at by a Renault Sport specialist rather than a jack of all trades place. The top spring holders come separately at around £18 each but the killer will be the labour as the R26/R27 setup is amazingly complex and takes a good 1.2hrs per side to dismantle properly. Then you need a bloody good spring bench (NOT three individual spring clamps) to safely remove the topmount/spring from the assembly before refitting it all as this setup will set out to hurt you!

thanks for the reply, im booking it into my local (back street) garage where ive been going for the past 6 year, to diagnose the problem yes ill have to pay him for the labour but the car is still under a 3 month warrenty from renault garage i bought car from but i have lost a little faith in them, so want a independant oppinion first so they cant just bodge it or fob me off....

hi all i am new here and need some help figuring this out.

i bought a renault megane 1.6 16 valve automatic it will ingage
reverse and drive fine it will engage drive but will not drive forward unless you give it loads
of revs then it will engage and drive for a short time when you stop it will not drive again
unless you give it loads of revs oil is ok what could be the problem?

Will you please start a new thread in the problems section with your specific issue. Just copy and paste your original message and head it up with 'automatic transmission fault' or something similar. That way we all don't end up talking about two completely separate issues at the same time.

I realise that this is a bit tedious (and not helpful to your cause), but these forums can descend into chaos if we aren't careful.

I wish I had something constructive to say about your car, but automatics are a complete mystery to me!
