When was it last serviced (the box, not the engine)? There are a few issues with these boxes relating to shifting faults and it's normally due to BVM valves or oil level/pressure faults... Anything else and you'll be needing the services of an auto gearbox witch doctor.

Ideally, to diagnose it correctly you're going to need a garage with some top end kit (and I'm not talking about a Snap-On Solus or Modis). AutoLogic or CLIP would be my weapons of choice and you need them to check the oil pressure readings, oil temp and control valve status's from a true cold start all the way up to over 90 oC making sure it stays within Renault tollerences.

Is this only just after start up? I've had a few autos over the years and each has tended to snatch when changing up from 1st to 2nd. After a couple of miles and half a dozen changes then all is okay. I put this down to the gearbox oil being cold.

Try running it in manual and see if this makes any difference, you just need to move the selector lever over to the left.

Perhaps the throttle body needs a clean? How many miles has it done?

I'd get on Google or Yell.com and find an Auto gearbox specialist near to you for a second opinion (and a second quote!). Don't give a Renault dealer £650 without a fight.

:)

If Renault turns out to be the only option contact Renault Customer Services and demand a contribution as a gearbox should last more than 30k miles. It will help your case if your car has been serviced at a Renault dealer but make a fuss and don't take no for an answer!

That is a proper 'boss' answer. RCS were very nice when my clutch went kaput one week after the car's third birthday. After much negotiation, they paid for the parts, and gave me a voucher to the tune of the balance. I'm saving that for a very rainy day (think window regulators) 8)

Not, however, like I'm going to give them the pleasure of servicing my car.

Best advice for Megane owners: sell it before it bankrupts you!

Okay, sh1t just got real!!! Where abouts in the country are you for starters? If you're anywhere near the Midlands I will volunteer my services (Diamond Motors) but if not I know of a few places that are more likely to help you. More importantly, did they offer any kind of explanation as to what was going on or say which "solenoid" because there are a few (Non of which, from memory, are anywhere near £650 to replace). Deffo get a second opinion as if it is the BVM or oil pressure sensor at fault it can be done for a lot less than what they're quoting.
