Whining noise not sure if gearbox or clucth
Whilst driving my car a get a whining noise or like a vibrating noise not to sure but whilst in motion and in every gear I get this noise but if I put the clucth in the noise disappears. I av also noticed a small leak from the passenger side drive shaft where it goes into the gear box,,,, as anyone got any ideas
Thanks danny

I would urgently advise you check the transmission fluid level, and check the drive shaft seals where they mate with the transmission.

Ok thanks. Will check 2moro, can the seals be changed by taking the drive shaft out and replace than from there or is a gearbox off job.
Re: Whining noise not sure if gearbox or clucth
I believe the shafts will come out provided you can remove them from the hub first.

Sounds like a clutch release bearing noise. always shuts up when you put your foot on the clutch.
as dave says check fluid levels as it lsounds like youre also loosing transmission fluid.

Re: Whining noise not sure if gearbox or clucth
snaky,
It is easy to diagnose. If the sound disappears when the clutch release bearing just slightly touches the plate (not disengaging yet), then it's it to blame. If the sound stops when either the clutch is fully disengaged or when the accelerator is slowly released (revs matching), then it is the gearbox. The gearbox usually whines differently in different gears.
The other approach is to recollect how you are using the clutch. If you ride it at the traffic lights, keep it depressed when stopped in traffic, keep the foot on the pedal when driving, drop it to cause wheel spin from start, etc., at least occasionally, then the answer is obvious. The damage, of course, could have done by the previous owner...

Re: Whining noise not sure if gearbox or clucth
Hi,
I have owned the abt 8 months it's been making the noise since, the noise isn't there when in Neutral soon as I set off the noise is there then when I change gear it goes away well soon as I release the clucth it's back again but when I'm on the motorway if I drive over a dip the virbrating noise is louder that part is abit hard to explane. The car seems to drive fine but the noise is just really annoying. Thanks for the replies.

Re: Whining noise not sure if gearbox or clucth
Just remembered I had the Cambelt changed soon as I got it, is it possible the noise could come from there if they have fitted it wrong,,, meaning if they have set the wrong tension. Seen a few posts on here abt wrong tension or something like that.
Re: Whining noise not sure if gearbox or clucth
The noise ought to be constant when measured against the rpm if the belt is to blame. And, independent of the transmission tests that Alex described.
The belt is set by frequency and not by any other measure. Aim at the transmission unless the noise is constant.

I have the same whining noise! Its your thrust release bearing! Mine still hasn't been sorted yet due to more serious problems in another thread! Its a pain in the arse!

Re: Whining noise not sure if gearbox or clucth
That would make sense - the slave cylinder/bearing assembly is prone to failure. Unfortunately, it is within the bell housing, so it is best to swap it, the clutch and if necessary the DMF at the same time. The reason being, that if you are paying for labour (at £50/hr), the other parts' costs are less significant, and it all has to come apart again - book for 6 hours or more. If you are repairing it yourself it is probably best to weigh up the cost of your free time. Not to mention the hassle of explaining to the other half why 'Don't you take it to a garage'? In my experience, such explanations are best measured in designer handbags.

Re: Whining noise not sure if gearbox or clucth
UPDATE,,,, had a three piece clutch kit fitted to my car and a new diff seal and the noise is still there and now another problem,, when I press the clutch down theres a strange noise but when I release the clutch the noise goes. so I think the problem was the dual mass fly wheel

So, it is the other way round now, right?

Re: Whining noise not sure if gearbox or clucth
its still got the same problem it always had but now with a added problem when pressing the clutch down there is a strange noise, jst had fitted a new clutch and slave so the only thing I can think of now is the dual mass????? unless the clutch and slave have been fitted wrong, I don't know if that's possible??
