Timing Belt

Postby misty2k » Mon May 21, 2012 12:05 pm

Folks,

My Meg II (Phase 2) CC 1.9DCi is at the dealership at the moment having the second rear window regulator replaced (the first one broke this time last year).

They did a full check and noticed that I am overdue for my timing belt to be replaced. It is a March '07 reg and I have about 34,000 on the clock. They want £780.21 to replace the timing belt as well a the water pump and, erm, something else... I zoned out at this point because I don't have £780.21... especially having just coined out £164.52 to get the rear window regulator replaced.

So, questions are these:
1) How big a deal is it if I *don't* get the timing belt replaced (likelyhood of failure, consequence if it does etc)
2) What is a reasonable price to get it done when I start shopping around for a non-dealership to do the work

Thanks

Dee

P.S. Long time no see. How has everyone been?

I paid £280 on my 1.5dci, which included the timing belt kit, waterpump, rear brake pads and all the labour. The 1.9 can't be all that different (this was at an independent garage). I'm sure Renault main dealers quoted not more than £350 for replacing the timing belt though at the time.

Shop around, and get it done - last thing you want it the belt to snap....

ikhan has a point, out side the dealer is a lot cheaper, and you should do it during this 5th year of the car. you can ride the car but keep in mind that you should save a few pounds to do it during this 5th year if possible, just dont let go for the 6th or 7th year, it can cost you a lot if it snaps

good luck

Agree with the above.

The consequences of a snapped belt is in £1000's not £100's. Yes they do snap even on low mileage cars. (The week mine was booked in for the job the accessories belt started to fray on the outside).

A target price with an independent garage is about £250 incl. timing belt kit, water pump and accessories belt.

Thanks guys. I'll start calling around tomorrow.

The difference between £250 and £750 is the difference between my Girlfriend trying to persuade me to get rid.

Good to know that the car is not (yet) another contributing factor to disharmony...!

I got a quote on thursday 24/05/12 for a cam belt, major service, MOT and labor on my 1.5dci 106 menage @ Renault Warwick £624 . Not impressed I havent done it yet but it needs to be done. Where did u get yours done.

Plus my driver Electric widow is being intermittently faulty.

Mine was done in Birmingham by an Italian car specialist that I've been using to service my Alfa Romeo for the last 8 years.
