diesel 1.5 on 1st startup ticks loud, ok when warm?
hi there
i did search forum prior to question but had no joy. the diesel megane is my 1st diesel i have owned, and i have noticed when i start up first thing when cold, it ticks very loud. but when warm, its fine.
the oil levels fine as is water etc and its driving perfect and no signs on dash, and still getting my 50-70 mpg.
so am i just worrying over nothing?
please please advise

Unless someone has a better idea, I'd say you were worrying over nothing. Worst case is that the valve adjustment is loose, but without consulting the manuals (you should), I can't foresee anything adverse. If applicable, this tends to affect only engines with very high mileages.

At idle revs this may be caused by low quality oil.

My 53 plate 1.5dci (50000 miles) certainly is more noisy when first ticking over, especially on a very cold morning. I don't think it's anything to worry about. I've had mine for just over 2 years and it's always been like it and I use mobil oil. My wife has a 58 plate peugeot 207 1.4 dci (20000 miles) and thats very similar when cold.

Just guessing... When the engine is cold, it injects the charge in one go. A burst of several injections is used on a warm engine, which sounds smoother. Check the temperature readings on OBD.

im with Alex, low quality oil produces that
And im with dave, valves clearance may be out of limits which can get better while the temperature rises and the metal expands...
give some news..

thanks for all comments i must say that i have paid close attention to it and it does still tick when warm just no where near as loud.
i think i need to find out what oil is advised fr diesels with high miles. as thats ehat i think it is.
my dci is a 53 plate with 118k on clock , service was done 4000'miles ago. im wondering if cheap oil been used and now iv covered a couple thousand miles, its got thin.
any recommendations on what thickness of oil to purchase?
thanks

Use some oil flush product also, it will help to clean the engine inside. Bardhall have a product for that purpose but i know there are several others...
For the oil, check this: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=19714
cheers

Oh hell! Be warned that these products can make a bad problem terminal for the engine. This is an age old debate, but I would not put kerosene into my engine to thin it. Big bits of crap tend to break off and block small engine passages, ruining the engine.
If it runs okay, I would leave well alone. Do several oil changes with Mobil 0W40 with filters too - the detergents in this oil will clean your engine gradually. Say 500 miles or 1000 miles between changes. More expensive in the short term, but not terminal.

I used to run thru cheap tesco oils to give it abit of a 'rinse out', like it's been said above the 'cleaners' can have the opposite affect to what your after!

Interesting... I would like to know how this unfolds.
