Battery cover fitting *Not recommended?

Postby steve.moody » Sun Mar 04, 2012 11:50 am

Hi,

I have a 2005 1.5 DCi Dynamic Megane which doesn't have a battery cover fitted.

I have seen one on eBay which I was going to buy and fit - Image I assume all the locating bits are there to screw it in place.

The question I have is on the document - https://www.uas-bg.com/meganii/eng/MR364MEGANE8.pdf under section 80A it says:

'NOTE - If the vehicle does not have a battery cover, ensure that one is not added.'
Does anyone know the reason for this? or what would happen if I fitted one anyway?

Thanks
Steve

That's strange,I dont have one on my 05 megane and my wife doesn't have one on her 07 megane, never did and i'm looking two of them, i just assumed that when the car was being serviced at some point the mechanics threw the cover to the side and forgot about it??

It will almost certainly be because of venting Hydrogen fumes. Some models have a small pipe attached to the battery to vent such fumes away while the battery is charging (while the engine is running). Personally, I've never ever heard of this being an issue and in any case depends on the battery make and design. The quantity of the gas is extremely small - virtually nil. Plus, it is the lightest element in the periodic table, so will vent naturally and cause no problem. Just make sure you have the correct hole spacings in the plastic cover.

Best advice for Megane owners: sell it before it bankrupts you!

Just checked and mine has the breather pipe fitted to the battery... so should be no problems with fitting the cover when it arrives.

I guess it says "don't fit a cover if there isn't one present" is because the most likely reason it is missing/not present would be due to the battery being replaced from the original and the new one may not have a breather pipe for these gases so fitting a cover would possibly cause issues.

Anyway thanks for the replys all.

Cheers
Steve
