funny noise when starting, (like a whine)

Postby manchesterAndy » Sun Jan 29, 2012 1:00 pm

ok sorry if this has been asked before,

its been running quite well of late, decent mpg and so on

this morning after it being sat on a hotel car park all night jumped in put my foot on brake(clutch start is broke) pressed my start button
"WHIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE" (like a drilling sound/blender/hoover, if you get what i mean) let go of everything in a panic with my hands in the air like a gun is pointed at me, foot on brake again "whiiiiiiiiiine"
and for a 3rd time same again

thought what the funk is this now, left it 2mins. give it another go, started fine, it was happy as larry flying down the motorway

any advice?

possibly the starter motor running on mate without doing its job, or a belt slipping, really hard to guess, but most wines come from those areas,

If it's a drilling sound/blender noise... that get's faster and higher pitched yes?

Starter isn't engaging on the flywheel. One day or another you'll get a screech instead of a whine... that'll be when it's half engaged on the flywheel.

Sounds like the starter as mentioned. There are three options: the battery is not sufficiently charged, the starter is kaput, or the ring teeth are damaged. These are listed in order of cheapness. Hopefully with some diagnostic work you will be able to resolve the issue.

Best advice for Megane owners: sell it before it bankrupts you!
