If the belt has gone on a F4R-T engine the chances are valves have bent.
Its a 30min job to take the head off.

Lift it off and my bet is you see bent valves.

If not they are at least to have dented the cylinder heads. Throwing out compresion.

What milage is the 225? The belt needs done a 4yo or 40K miles. To be safe.

I would also change all fluids after each 5K miles.

Hi all, quick update - Renault have had the cam covers off and one of their master technicians has looked over it today

Turns out the alternator belt snapped off and then wrapped itself round the cambelt which has damaged the cam and bent 12 valves, so it needs a cam kit, obviously head off then replace valves, belt kit and then put it all back together do fluids reset fault codes etc, what do Renault want for the pleasure.... £2547 including vat

I almost fainted, if there's anyone out there who knows of either a replacement Engine or someone who can do the above work as near to Lancaster as possible for a bit more of a reasonable price then please let me know, it is gonna have to go on the credit card this close to Xmas

I've seen a replacement engine on eBay for £700 and they will swap it in and out for £250, I realise this I quite a good deal but they are 5 hours from me! The people at Renault told me they were gutted or me as its one of the nicest 225's they have had in, although it's not much good if it doesn't work!

I'll wait in anticipation, cheers peeps

hi bud a goood whack of that is there labour costs, if you shop about and buy the cambelt kit and all other belts and replacement valves etc, then take it to a normal capable garage, with normal hourly rates you'd be looking at 800-1k all in tops, as for the engine did they say any of the valves had scored or damged the head in anyway?

and buying second hand engines is a mine field bud, it may be just like yours someones shifting along as its internally weak, there's no way of knowing at least you know yours has issues etc,

i hope you get it sorted bud totally shite just before crimbo and over 2k is one hell of a sh1t pressie.

where are you located out of interest for recommending a good garage etc

i'm lucky in that sense there's a renault specialist 200 meters from me.

Hi mate thanks for the advice, so you reckon rebuilding is the best option?

The guy from Renault did say the parts were expensive for the job so if you have any ideas of a good parts supplier that would be good, I am based in lancaster, Lancashire about 20 miles north of Preston

You are lucky to be that close to a specialist, I just keep turning up blanks wherever I look!

Thanks again

well easiest thing is get parts break down from renault garage

then scour the net for better deals, get it all sent to yourself ready for whe you find somewhere

just try all your local garages mate until you find one thats seems remotly sensible price wise and the chaps seem up for the job.

i've yet to see anyone go behond 1k for this kinda work on the basic garage level, but if its just head off good clean new valves and timing belt etc, thats childs play for any half decent mechanic.

Ok mate thanks for the help, I'll keep it in mind as I'm obviously now on the search

Hopefully won't be too long before I can enjoy it again! Every time I look at it now I just want to forget it exists, although it still looks fairly cool!

If there are bent valves, surely the pistons are dented also???

At that moeny you would be better off with a 2nd engine.

I have seen the F4RT go with around 40K miles for between 1K-1.5K

Strap on the turbo and other parts and your good to go.

Well that what I would do if in your situation.
