Postby telboy73 » Wed Nov 02, 2011 4:40 pm

Hi, just a quick one, i've heard that it's best to change water pump when changing cambelt. Is this correct? cheers

True, unless the mileage is very low.

As above, it's because the new belt is tighter and this will put more strain on the pump an often cause ok ones to fail, to replace the pump requires the removal of the belt so itll cost alot more doing it separately with 2x the labour..

A new pump is only £20 or thereabouts so makes sense and obviously change the accessories belt as well. And even more obviously don't go to a dealer, go to an independent you trust.

Guide price is <£200 supplied (both belts and water pump) and fitted at an independent. Just make sure that they know to set the tension by frequency not 'by hand' (although I doubt it makes much difference, Renault specify it this way and it's how I replaced mine).

£200 or so as I stated above including parts and labour from a reliable independent. Stick an additional zero on if you go to the dealer.

FYI: It's often a good idea to source the parts yourself to save money. I bought a complete kit (tensioner, belts and pulley from Gates - who I regard as the best manufacturer).

Just had cambelt done, took them 4 hours, i got charged £309 for cambelt and water pump :( would this seem the correct price if they used Renault parts?

also i am thinking of taking it back to the garage tomorrow as the car just doesnt seem to shift any more its just flat. has anyone else had this does the belt need running in?

thanks

The belt does not need running in. Either you are imagining things, or the cam shaft (twice the number of teeth as the crank) is one tooth out. Some engines will run with this error.

However, the battery was most likely disconnected during the service, so expect the ECU to re-learn its calibrations. Give it a week, and if it's no better, take it back whence it came for further analysis.

That's what I would do in the absence of better advice.
