STEERING LOCKED / NOT LOCKED

Postby Meggy-megane » Wed Oct 26, 2011 10:22 am

My 2003, 1.6 16v have been parked since 23 September 2011 due to the need to replace a dephaser pulley and cambelt hence it was showing "CHECK INJECTION" on display. When I parked the car the ignition was turning but would not start the car, however when the mechanic arrived over the weekend to change the the cambelt and pulley the words "STEERING LOCKED / STEERING NOT LOCKED when I insert and pull the card and the car would not start. I have browsed most of the answers on the forum but non of them are giving me the exact cause and what I am expected to do in order to unlock the streering, and what is it causing the car not to start. The car is standing at a very awkward position, in order for the mechanic to be able to change the pulley we need to push the car but the steering is locked.

Please help :life :life God Bless

do you ear a "Click" sound like something is disengaging when you press the Start button? normally you must ear it otherwise the locking mechanism isnt working and requires further investigation.

no click means the steering lock mechanism isnt working. worth a check, its under the steering column. you have to take the cover beneath and you will see it, its attached with only 1 screw. see if the plug is correctly attached. the screw is left, not as the usual screws that are right.

good luck

swap the mechanism, it really seems to be that mechanism your problem. doesnt need to be coded.

good luck

Be aware that (if I remember correctly) the mounting bolt is a shear-head type and a left hand thread. Meaning you turn it clockwise to undo it.

When you say the "mechanism" do you meant to open the unit up and change. or the steering lock as a whole. I though they were coded?

their aren't coded, no worry about that.

the mechanism is separated from the the lock actuator. The black box must be coded, but the mechanism is separated from the black box and dont need to be coded. Take it out like previously stated.

cheers
