Front Discs Renewal

Postby DaveyB61 » Tue Sep 20, 2011 10:14 pm

I've got a '55 reg Megane Oasis 1.6 which has done about 42k miles, I've just had a service and MoT from my local Renault dealer who has advised that the front discs will need to be replaced soon - is this normal for a Megane this age and mileage?

If its driven hard or driven with no engine braking thats not bad. Our 8 years old megane was done at 2 years old at 30k and again 5 years later at 60k.

Yes it was driven like a rally car in its early years which brought around them being changed at 30k. Tho last change was required as they were badly corroded.

all depends how its been driven..as a diesel car its going to be 'heavy' anyway on front disc/pads
short journeys too can affect the amount of brake wear.. so at 30k.. its not bad.. mine are at 38k and will be done soon..

Mine lasted 5 years and 30k (just) then all 4 needed replacing. Renault manufacture their brake discs from the finest soft cheese, Brie I think, so I don't know why they don't last longer!
All the other cars I've owned the bake pads wear out before the actual discs, Renault vice versa.
Just one of the many joys.
By the way, don't pay Renault dealer to do them. They'll charge you twice as much as an independent. I ordered the parts online and got my local MOT station to put them on, saved a small fortune.

Thanks for the advice, I've just joined and this is my first post. Good to know there is impartial help and advice out there. Seems like Renaults are a bit more un-predictable than I thought when I first bought the car, just had a window regulator replaced cos window was going up and down on its own (renault recognised problem and paid 75% of repair, still had to cough up £100+)

As stated above its easy enough to do discs / pads change yourself as save yourself a load of money. Plenty of threads on here about it, but a Hayne's manual is the best thing you could invest in.
