Yet another window regulator related problem

'05 5dr Megane with no Renault service history.

I heard a clicking in the nearside front door the other day, turned out it was the window motor (or regulator?) clicking trying to go up. Upon lowering the window it would then not go up except in 1" jolts. I did a reset and it seemed to work OK after that. Anyway I returned to the car today to find the window down all the way and no amount of re-setting or swearing would make it shut. I have spent a mad 2 hours or so pulling the door apart and managing to wedge the glass back up with some lumps of wood so at least I can still use the car for work.

Now, is it worth messing around testing the switch or checking its getting a power supply etc or should I just go and buy a new regulator. Am I right in thinking the regulator is the black bit on the motor? As I understand it you can get just the motor/regulator or the motor/regulator and the guides/cables. If I buy just the motor is it a nightmare to change the cables etc over from the old one to the new one or am I better off buying the lot?

I recall reading on here that the warranty was extended to 5 years so if that's the case I'm stuffed. I had the offside one done by Renault but the car was only just out of its normal 3 year warranty then. Its over 6 years old now I can't see Renault giving me much in the way of goodwill!

OK, thank you for your response, spoken to Renault and they'll pay for 75% of the cost so I'll either have to fork out £78 for just the Regulator or £104 for the Reg & the loom if required. Although I've hit the old 'delays caused by the tsunami' that I notice others have also received so they don't know when they can get a Reg.

What are the chances the loom will need replacing? ie I just replace the Regulator/motor for one of ebay or wherever.

normally the loom are ok, just need a little contact spray to eliminate any water, if present.

Both my sons scenic and my megan have sufferred window problems. In the case of the scenic the the motor failed to drive up or down. Testing the scenic assembly in one of the other working doors confirmed the problem to be with the motor and its adjacent controller, the plastic case attached to it. Having confirmed the problem I actually carefully removed the controller cover with a hacksaw to examine the controller mechanism. To my suprise I found it to be a complex electronic pcb, virtually repair proof. I am incidentally a retired computer technician. I seperated the control unit from the motor, which when I applied 12 volts to the motor, as I expected it rotated ok. and obviously when I reversed the 12v supply it rotated in the reverse direction. Proving the fault to be with the logic pcb. In the case of the megan the window was sruck in the down position. Using the same technique, ie, trying the assembly in a known good position confirmed that the fault was with the motor and control pcb. What I found, by removing the motor and control pcb from the lift mechanism, and plugging in to one of the other working doors was that the motor would run in the down position when the lift was selected and of course ran in the down direction when down was selected.
in both cases the problem was not in the wiring loom, but with the complex control pcb. IN BOTH CASES PRIOR TO FAILING ALTOGETHER, IT WAS POSSIBLE TO RAISE THE WINDOW WHEN USING THE KEY TO LOCK THE DOORS, BUT BOTH SUBSEQUENTLY FAILED. Only replacing the motor and control unit will cure the fault. It is a bit tricky to rethread the control cables, besst if you get help, its a 3 hands job, but it can be performed alone. Cheers.

OK thanks for the feedback, its going into Renault tomorrow 'for an assessment' as the regulators are on back order anyway.

Oh well just had it done at Renault for £78, really couldn't face taking the door apart and putting back together again so just went with Renault in the end.

On a separate issue is it me or does it seem every time you visit a Renault garage with one fault, if you're lucky enough to get the original fault fixed you seem to leave with another?

Whilst they fixed the Reg, upon getting in the car ready to drive off I discovered the speaker no longer works (dodgy connection I've checked that already) the indicator stopped working (dodgy connection needed a prod - OK now) and the button for the handbrake has been pushed right in. (I knew that was on the way out).
