just acquired my 2004 1.5 dci,i was aware of a slight rattle noise when driving over uneven surface, seems to be from front passenger side, there is no noise when driving on smooth road surface,no wheel wobble, and no noise when cornering etc,had the car in today for the timing belt/waterpump/service today, and asked my local garage to investigate. When i phoned inquiring as to the problem being sussed,i was told that everything was in order, bar the tie rod ends were a little loose, and this was probably the cause.I have since read it could be strut mounts/engine mounts, has anyone else had a familiar problem like this, and could it possibly be tie rod ends?Garage was looking £100+vat to replace....thanks

Re: Rattle noise on uneven road....
tie rod rounds about £35, plus labor for 1 h (its not that much, 1/2h its enough), plus the tracking, £100 its not too hard to believe. ask to check both rod ends and axial bars for good condition. Do all the service necessary at one time, this way you will have to track the car only once.
Re: Rattle noise on uneven road....
Thanks for the reply tomalamix..the car is due an MOT in a little over 5 weeks time,so i will be getting these done, just wondering if these needing replaced would be giving me the rattle noise on uneven road,or should i be looking at possibly something else that maybe the mechanic never covered
Cheers

Re: Rattle noise on uneven road....
the rod ends or axial rod can reproduce that rattling sound. In this matters you must solve one problem at the time to detect from where the noise come from. At least now ir from the rods...
Re: Rattle noise on uneven road....
Quick update, had the car in today, they told me it needed the tie rod ends, and i think he said 1 track rod...anyway picked it up this evening, all in £156 and this included the vat
...drove out of the yard the first bit of uneven road....and the rattle is still there. Now i take it these parts were not the problem, but the garage will insist they needed replace im sure, but this has not solved what i originally wanted cured....is there any point moaning to the garage, well the fact that no plastic sheets were put down, and i have oil prints on drivers door, and seats warrents a good moan for a start.Anyone else have any pointers,as i cant afford to be replacing parts that are not causing this noise

Re: Rattle noise on uneven road....
it could be also the rubber around the stabilizer...and maybe also that they swapped the wrong tie rod...
its straight forward to find the cause of the noise but that requires some time dismantling the car parts and check them for perfect condition. tie rod ends, axial tie rods, suspension support strut, suspension arm, stabilizer rubbers, stabilizer arms...it really needs a deep analysis to hit the right spot.

Re: Rattle noise on uneven road....
I had what sounded like a rattle for a couple of weeks, didn't happen all the time though. I had the car up in the air and upon inspection no movement or play from anything and nothing untoward to see, turned out it was a spring on the way out, it eventually broke one day.
Re: Rattle noise on uneven road....
phoned garage today to let them know the rattle was still there and was told that they had pretty much checked what they could and the car was sound,i informed them that the rattle is indeed there on uneven ground from the front passenger side, and my reply was pretty much...well we could change shocks, coils etc...but then you could spend a fortune replacing parts to find out were the rattle is!!!...so i think its time to look at another garage,i also informed them about the oil,and was told next time im in mention it and it will get a valet. This evening when i went to get into the car,i noticed a small dent on the bodywork(car has not been moved since i collected it from garage)so i can only assume this was picked up while in the garage
Should have checked it more closely before leaving:(

Re: Rattle noise on uneven road....
yeah eddie pretty sure its coming from front passenger side, checked the net and peeps with the exact same problem fixed it by replacing the strut bearing...my garage told me unless the rattle occurs when turning, its not that at fault
also was told the bushes need to be inspected properly, well its due the mot in about 5 weeks so i may leave it until nearer then to have another go at finding this fault

Ive found several stuff to swapp and the out side rattle sttoped, the car runs solid. the problem now its inside...i feal a sever shock on the steering column when i pass some series of bumps...it makes a noise like it has loose screws inside a box...damm
Re: Rattle noise on uneven road....
