keycard replacement

hi guys,
Just getting a 1.5 dci 55 plate meg this week but its only got one key....
now ive got a spare keycard from my last meg still at home almost unused anyone know if this can be programmed to the car?

otherwise its looking like a dealer for another keycard and i could really do without the expense. This insurance has almost killed me.

there are some rumors that its possible, despite every warnings written everywhere that other cards wont work...with all this scrambled info it might be possible.

I had a second keycard brand new from a market stall, encoded and my old one re-done at the same time. It did cost £100, but much cheaper than Renault. After 18 months, both still working perfectly.

and where can we go with our 2nd hand key to program it to our car?

iv'e heard of this but also heard there are problems with doing it this way.
the man scans the code from your present keycard and scans it onto a second hand keycard that has had a new chip fitted.
this means the car thinks that both keycards are the same one.

the problem begins that even these keycards use a rolling code aswell as the programmed code. if you only use the same keycard all the time after about 40 unlock or locks (20 journeys) the rolling codes in both keycards will be so different the one not used will stop working and need reprogrammed again.

thats why when you have 2 proper keycards they have different codes so the car knows which one is being used and which one is not. hence the rolling codes are stored differently for each keycard.

thats what i've been told but open to hearing any different

didnt know this info but it makes sense because i have two cards, one reproduce on the dash "replace key battery" and the other dont. how the hell the car knows which one have the dried battery? maybe what you told can explain that...nice...

Just seen the reply to a previous answer I gave; the market trader re-programmed both my new key and my old one, and after well over 2 years both are still working perfectly (unlike other parts of the car!).

when done corrrctly the keycard is not reprogrammed, the car is programmed to accept the keycards
