Should I change alternator belt when doing timing belt chang

Postby itgoodson » Mon May 23, 2011 10:46 pm

Hi all

A bit of a noob - both to these forums having recently bought a Megane II Sport Tourer and don't a lot about cars, but...

About to have my local independent garage change the timing belt and the dreaded dephaser pulley on the 1.6 VVT. My question is should I have the alternator belt changed at the same time. I'm buying the parts myself for my garage to do. I'm not sure whether the alternator belt is commonly changed at the same time as the timing belt change. When I telephoned Renault and asked their quote for all the things I'd need for the job they listed the alternator kit.

any pointers would be much appreciated

Ian

I would, the belt is only £15 or so and it won't cost hardly any extra labour.
Worth it for peace of mind I'd have thought.

Always change it. If it fails, it usually takes the timing belt with it - and this destroys the engine.

Best advice for Megane owners: sell it before it bankrupts you!

Def agree with davelowe as this happened to a friend of mine and wrecked the engine and I have to say this was at 49000 miles so beware and dont take risks.

Yes, change the alternator belt and the water pump as well.
