2004 1.6 16v Crankshaft Fault Code Help P0340

Postby OwenBoy » Tue Feb 08, 2011 6:44 pm

Hello all, as a novice to the world of diagnostics I am after some expert advice

Mrs inherited a 2004 1.6 16v Megane 45k has been starting poorly for a few months on and off, I have a noise which I believe to be the Dephaser unit which I am positive is the problem with the starting issues.

However, engine management light on recently with Camshaft sensor related codes. Apart from random starting issues engine operation is normal, as is fuel consumption. MIL Clearsed and it returns after 500 yards of driving.

Yesterdays scan showed up P0340 - CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR A CIRCUIT BANK 1 OR SENSOR.
I have replaced the sensor with new and the wiring/plug seems fine. In the past another code has shown up with a desciption of Camshaft Position sensor circuit open.
My Autel 509 wont let me look at the Camshaft sensor value during cranking.

Is there any test with the multimeter I can do?

Have you got any pointers for a learner please.

Any help or advice very much appreciated

O :grin

Hi mate, you will need to fix the dephaser problem as you will keep getting this fault as long as the dephaser is faulty, what is happenin is that the inj comp is having conflicting info in relation to crank and cam positions, i.e. because the computer reads crank position and because it powers the dephaser solonoid to get the pulley to do a certain thing and the sensor then tells comp that its not where it is meant to be it causes a conflict of info and then logs a fault. As it can't tell you why there is a conflict in info it gives a general fault code

You sir are a gent, you have confirmed my suspicions. I thought it must be guessing at the issue!

I will research the locking kit I need and sort the belts and dephaser out.

Many, Many Thanks
