Getting very low MPG on my Megane, and its cutting out

Postby iddyfita » Mon Jan 31, 2011 7:44 pm

My Megane is having a few minor (hopefully) problems, firstly, being that when i press the start button, it cuts out as the revs drop too low, and the lights dim also. The only way to stop it from cutting out is by revving the engine, until warm which is a pain.

Ive read a few things on this forum, some say its related to the TDC Sensor, others the Coolant temperature sensor, some say the MAP and some say the throttle body needs cleaning. Ive also noticed that its drinking fuel too much, and giving me a very low MPG reading on the trip computer (12mpg lowest and around 23 average) and its really peeing me off, as ive put 65 pounds worth of petrol in since Wednesday, and considering its a 1.4, it just doesn't seem right.

Could someone point me in the right direction, or if you've had this problem, how did you fix it?

Many many thanks,
Jake

Have you checked basics like spark plug condition, air filter condition? You would be well advised to clean out the throttle body. For a 30 minute job it is well worth doing the free checks yourself before embarking on more costly jobs.

Thanks for the reply, and yes, changed the air filter yesterday, and the spark plugs seem ok too.
I took it back to the dealer earlier who is going to be changing the CV joint on it, and also i explained the problem and he is also going to clean out the throttle body too. Its going to cost me £100 although I only got the car Wednesday which is quite annoying and ive put £85 worth of petrol in since Wednesday which is ridiculous considering its only a 1.4!

Thanks, Jake
