CLUTCH/START NOT WORKING..BREAK/START OK ?

Postby alexjb » Wed Nov 10, 2010 8:18 pm

Hi all.
We have a Megane 1.9dci with push button start.

All been ok untill recently when the wife told me the car wont start.!!...

I use the break/button method of starting but she goes for the clutch/button option.

Well thats packed up and it now only starts on the break/start... :-(

Anyone have a clue what the prob could be ?. :idea

Seriouse ?... Will the break/start follow suit and go too ?.

Cheers in advance.

The wire to the end switch on the clutch pedal is broken. It's a quick DIY fix, no parts are required. Extend the wires a bit or they will break again.

The wiring is directly above the pedals immediately behind the steering wheel trim. You can feel it if you reach down. Sometimes wigging it makes it come back to life.

The easiest thing is to solder in a short section of cable with heatshrink sleeving and secure the harness appropriately - as Renault should have done in the first place.

A hint -- remove the end switch first. It is a twist a pull thing. Then attach new wires to it (20 cm), soldering may be required at this stage. Connect these wires to the cable by twisting them up and using heat shrink or insulating tape. Soldering is better, but you'll be doing with your head down in the foot well. Lay out the wires properly and fix them to the underneath of the plastic panel. Otherwise, you will be catching them with your shoe.

Soldering: The Basics.

You will need
a) A soldering Iron (25W)
b) Solder 60/40 Lead/Tin with Flux
c) Some pliers/wire strippers
d) Practice
e) Insulation tape or heat shrink sleeving
f) Some wire

Procedure for practice:
1) Strip two ends of cable exposing around 10mm each of stranded wire
2) Slide some sleeving if appropriate over and away from where you are working
3) Get a file and make a flat and clean end to the soldering iron bit
4) Wet a cloth or sponge. If the bit gets dirty or corroded the wipe it quickly over the cloth for a new sheen.
5) Twist together the wires you wish to solder so you have around 5mm of entwined cable
5a) You may wish to 'tin' the ends - go to step 7 then come back
6) With the join secured, apply the hot end of the soldering iron
7) With the iron applied, touch the end of the solder on the join. If it doesn't melt instantly, wait. If it does, let plenty flow and then remove the iron - this should take no more than 5 seconds.
(8) Put the heat shrink sleeving over the joint and heat gently or wrap with insulation tape.
