White/blue smoke on startup

Postby direstraits » Fri Nov 05, 2010 4:27 pm

I detected that on startup there's small amount of bluish/whitish smoke coming out of the exhaust. The smoke disappears almost immediately. It is not condensation. Any guesses what this could be about?

Come on Andy, read the signature!

If it's cold in Denmark at the moment, with a diesel, blue or white smoke might just be unburned fuel due to a richer mixture. It could obviously be engine oil. I'd check the oil level regularly and not worry about it. Chances are it's always done that and you are being paranoid - especially since you say it only happens momentarily on startup. It's always worth checking/replacing the air filter and cleaning the EGR and intake manifold.

Best advice for Megane owners: sell it before it bankrupts you!

I agree with Dave here.

if it was anything more sinister you would be likely to have a creamy residue in the oil filler cap. which is normally caused by a dud head gasket or cracked head etc...

as its only a momentary issue on start up, I would stick to Daves advice :)

Thanks for the replies, guys, I appreciate it!
Oil is regularly checked, RN0710 0w40 is used, no residue on the filler cap, or inside the PCV. It is a bit cold these days in Denmark, a bit under 0 degrees centigrade. I'd give it a go with the EGR, but I'll need to go to the authorised dealer to set the zero position with CLIP (air filter is changed every 6250 miles, oil and cabin filter, too).
My main concern is that the oil is coming from the engine head via valves into the cylinders. Which would probably mean ££££€€€€, sooner or later...
